I saw these in Taiwanese Taxis all the time.

Having worked around real HUDs, these cheap car units definitely not the real thing (they don't have collimators, for example.) Without a narrow-band dichroic filter/combiner, the windshield-mounted reflector has to be dark in order to transmit the light from the LED display. This means that you have the place the HUD "out of the way" so to speak (i.e. it's not going to be like the new BMW/Corvette units that display the information in your immediate field of view.)

They do, however, put info on the windshield if that's what you want.

this is true. i know we cant compare these to true huds like an f16 lol, but they help to keep your eyes on the road rather than the instument panel. also it must be noted that the bmw wind shield uses darker tinted glass in the area of their hud which aparently is real expensive and has been missed by a lot of insurance companies

Actually, I have flown real- heads-up displays and they aren't what they're cracked up to be (no pun intended). Once you turn into the sun you have real problems seeing. At night, you have to turn it way down to get good outside vision. They do allow you to look at your data (most of the time) with out looking down but they are probably not worth the money.

point taken, but this unit has a light sensor that auto dims when it gets dark also it comes with 2 pieces of reflective film (just in case you mess the first one up) that show the display even in bright sunlight. mine cost me only 39 gbp which is about 78 dollars us.
i know its only a gimmic but it really works and is a lot better in the flesh than on paper.

I really Like that I wonder if you could cut it into the dash and make it look somewhat stock?

the unit is only small so shouldnt look to bad. also its magnetic and comes with a metal plate that sticks to your dash so it wont fly around. also means you can put it in your pocket so it cant get stolen.
remember this is also a 31 channel bluetooth gps reciever so you can also hook it up to your smart phone, pda, or laptop which has nav software and use it as a gps also.

just found this video on youtube. again its not the best of quality

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=zgPScc...eature=related

i also think the camera shows up the reflectivness of the film too much ie: the film is more transparent to the human eye

The Crossfire already comes with one. It's mounted in the upper, center portion of your windshield.
