I was wondering if it is ok to run super 89 octane instead of premium? If not what effects will this have on the engine.

I'm guessing you have a SRT6, personally I wouldn't run 89 in mine, but... for the record, 89 octane recently tested, (by the state), at stations around my area proved that the 89 octane was in most cases over 90. Most "super" designations start at 91, so if perhaps if you have a SRT and don't run it in a manner likely to initiate detonation it may be perfectly fine...But I'm not a Chrysler/Mercedes tech nor pay for your car, just some guy with an opinion...and you'll probably get lots of opinions from people just like me... Bottom line if you don't run the car hard with the 89, my guess is 99.9% fine, my hold back is not running it hard without ensuring high octane. For your question about damage. The main concern is detonation, and the damage that comes along with that, (piston fractures/burns, valve damage, rod and bearing damage)

I think it's been proven that running anything below premium dumbs down the engine, you get worse gas milegae, and it ends up being the same price anyways.

Put it this way..

You have a 32,000$ vechicle, is it REALLY WORTH IT to save 5$ or so every time you fill up your tank and risk any damage being caused? You are NOT driving a Neon here..

yes your right!

by using the lower grade fuel you do save money at the pump, but you are also loosing milage, maybe about 12-16 mpg,

where as with premium you pay an extra 8-10 cents a gallon, but your milage will also increase to about 22-27 mpg.

I assume you can now comprehend that there is no real economic cost savings from using low grade fuels.

I had two Neon's(SRT-4's) and put premium in them as well. Whatever it says in the owners manual or on the fuel door is the ONLY/MINIMUM(quality) fuel you should use. Save you pennies elsewhere folks...................buy one less drink at the bar or one less pack of cigarettes.

on the srt6 you risk detonation in hot weather and hard driving, on the na version of the crossfire you just lose a few hp. i would run premium since that is what was intended to be ran in the car.

simple answer. Your car is tuned to run on premium. If you use lower octane or have a bad tank the knock sensors will retard the timeing. This does a few things. It protects the engine from imidiate damage, reduces power therefore increasing fuel consumption to make similar power.
My .02 if you are stuck somewhere go for it, if not put premium in it.
