Default Oil Filter Leak from the top

Hey guys i noticed some oil and the ground today so I popped the hood opened and saw where it looks like the oil filter might be leaking from the top. Can an oil filter be to tight...it's on there pretty tight....is this a common problem and is should I be able to fix this on my own...thanks. One other question how do I tell on this damn dipstick if the oil level is good... i don't really see how to read it properly...thanks

I just had this happen to me a couple of weeks ago. I had to change the o-rings to get it to stop. Only had about 5000mi on the filter when it started leaking. It leaked so bad it caused the belt to come off. FYI I was using a Purolator filter.

Don't feel bad, I did the same thing. Here is a link to the thread. The "O" ring goes right above the threads on the cap. I lost about two quarts of oil, but did not have a problem with the belt. Hope this helps.

Non OEM Oil filter big O ring is thinner that the one supplied with OEM filter, when I found leak, and belt came off I just bought OEM filter and replace O ring, them on next oil change, installed OEM filter with same O ring.

Yeah looks like I'm having the same problem Aftermarket filter kits must have a slightly smaller diameter ORing. I've replaced mine twice between oil changes and it just started leaking again

With 40k miles on my car, I've changed the oil and filter about every 4000 to 5000 miles and I've only used "Factory" oil filters. Mostly Mercedes, a couple Chrysler. (Knock on wood) I haven't had any problems yet.
For the record, (for the last 38 years) I've only used "Factory" oil filters on all my cars. Thanks to a problem that I experienced with an "off brand" filter that the dealer installed when they changed my oil with out me asking them to.

I think I would have shot them. That was a bad thing on their part.

I've had leaks with both the Purolator & STP filters (O rings).
