Default Borla?

I will be replacing my exhaust next month with a borla exhaust, I have read the threads and it seems that by popular opion that i should remove the resonator (which by the way i have no clue what that is) I will have the work done professionaly(of course) but could anyone explain first how hard of a task this is.. is this something that an "exhaust shop" has to do? Is there an extra cost to this and how much...and lastly does the exhaust sound better without? Lots of questios Thanks to all who can reply!!! BLACKS

The resonator is the large part before the muffler. Just look under your car, you can't miss it. Just do a search, since there are several threads on mufflers.

Again, here's a link to a thread about how to get a Magnaflow 16633 Catback exhaust for $350 if you haven't already ordered it for more:
https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum/...ad.php?t=24489

Yes, the $350 deal from WunderCarParts, 1-888-986-3373 is still available!

Can those of you with the Borla installed on their XF please post a sound clip or link to a site that has the Borla installed on an XF? I've searched and have yet to find one.

as far as i know it won't be as loud... im not sure it has any purpose other than that..... it is a SOUND resonator, as in the sound bounces around in a metal chamber and amplifies itself, more or less. feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.

and the restonator should be very obvious. its the huge metal box that sticks off to the side on the piping, located more or less under the driver's seat. there isn't one on the stock exhaust, and there is on the borla... trust me you'll understand when you have it in hand

and again, I wouldn't recommend cutting it out. Not only are you cutting apart the bolt on system that you just paid quite a sum for, you are possibly reducing the gains made, since the exhaust was tuned WITH the resonator, and I'm pretty sure the car won't be as loud...

Apparently you are wrong. The resonator is used to reduce noise. See the link for a description. That's probably why the Borla is quieter than the Magnaflow, and why the Magnaflow has drone at certain RPMs with no resonator.

According to the description of a resonator, it would probably be much louder if it is removed.

I think if somebody could finally get a video sound clip showing both, I truly believe this argument would be settled!...

huh wierd about the resonator... but I should be able to post a sound clip this weekend. I have the resonator on my car. If someone without it wants to post a sound clip of theirs, then we would know for sure...

but I was just watching a few vids on youtube of other cars with and without the resonators. It completely changes the sound. It gets a little louder, but its not as smooth. In low rpm's giving it a little gas, my car is LOUD and its SMOOTH. sounds great... all of my friends that ride in my car complement the sound. If I were you, I'd install it with resonator and drive it around for a bit. If you don't like the sound, get the resonator removed. It probably comes down to a matter of personal choice...

I don't know if you already installed the Borla system or not. Back in February 2007 I installed mine. I had my mechanic do it for $ 75.00(In New York City Area) with the resonator, very easy to do. But the system was so quiet and I wasn't happy with it. I wento to an exhaust performance shop and I had the resonator removed for $ 200.00 and did in a way that if in the future if will get to loud I can put the resonator back, but I don't think is going to happen. I'm very happy the way the car sound and is not annoying or to loud for me. Hope this will help you with your decision, let me know which way you go, I'm curious.

I don't understand how the car is to quiet with the resonator??? With my borla its right at the limit I can stand expecially at low rpm it rumbles my entire interior and sounds really low and gets in your eardrum. At high rpm it sounds like a European sports coupe. I can't imagine it louder, it would drive me nuts. different strokes I guess.
