Default Gas usage!

Before I take my XF in to have it checked...would like to get some suggestions about what is causing it to use more gas....have 49007 miles on it and no other apparant problems with it. I'm guessing to check the air filter but would like to have other ideas ...don't remember if I have ever had a tuneup....but it runs good so just asking the experts???

It might help if you told us what you were getting before, and what mileage you're getting now

Hey, sweetie! How ya' been?

At 50K, you should change the air filters, or clean them if you have K&N's. If you're replacing them, think about getting K&N's.

P/N 33-2290 and, of course, you need 2 of them. Amazon is $31 each with free shipping. They are much better than any others. And last forever. Just clean and oil them every 15K miles:

The cleaning/oil kit is another $12:
http://www.amazon.com/99-5050-Filter...=pd_sim_auto_3

At 50K you might be getting gunky deposits in the throttle body and MAF. They can both be cleaned, but you may ask someone else to do it. Make sure your tires are properly inflated. 33/32 as I recall.

I think it's too early for spark plugs.

Anyone else? Help this lady-she's one of the good ones!

I can think of a few things at that milage. Check the fuel filter, if its orginal get it changed out as the regulator is in there and that manages the pressure in the rails which means if the pressure is low and not flowing well you will need more throttle input per given speed thus using more fuel. If it running lean the computer will dump some extra fuel to cool down the cats.

I speak form recent expereince as I had to replace a broken filter and fuel pump and my miles per tick on the fuel gage jumped up by 25 miles on the first notch on the tank from full. At that rate I will add nearly 100 miles per fill up.

The next would be a failing O2 sensor which may be causing the engine to dump some fuel to cool down the cats or correct a lean fuel mixture.

Max, I have to disagree on the plugs ....
I replaced all mine at 45,000 and they were kinda cruddy and the gaps on some were almost 50 thousands.
You can get a set of Iridiums from Rob at Needswings for $82.95, and you should also get a set of replacement plug wires while they are on sale at $129.95.
