Default Did you know ?

From the service manual :
I knew there were 2 plugs per cylinder, but I didn't know :

The two spark plugs per cylinder are fired slightly out of phase to prevent the cylinder pressures from rising too quickly, which could cause knocking. To prevent one spark plug from eroding more quickly than the other, they alternately lead each other.

Those brilliant German engineers. These engines are built to last.

So I wonder if running 87 octane will cause knocking or not ?

From the 2004 Service Manual:
"Highly sensitive anti-knock sensors, Refer to Page 8I-6, can distinguish knocking conditions in individual cylinders and retard the ignition timing on the cylinders that are knocking. This anti-knock control prevents damage to the engine and allows operation on lower grade fuel, but only in emergencies. Premium grade fuel is required under normal operating conditions to ensure full power and economy, and because the anti-knock control system may not be able to prevent knocking on low grade fuels under all operating conditions."

Your car will still run on the lower grade gas, but what happens to performance and fuel economy and is it worth risking damage to the engine? I've seen what knock can do and besides if fuel economy drops by one mile per gallon, you will almost break even on the cost per mile driven.

You just confirmed why Im NOT willing to be the guinea pig. The manual states "premium grade" and thats the only grade I allow her to drink.

Both of my girls only drink NON-ethanol 93 for the last couple of years. Can't get more "premium" then that!

And this...

A bill that repeals the state ethanol requirement was signed into law Friday by Gov. Rick Scott of Florida

The station where I've been getting my non-ethanol gas from found a loophole in the law by selling the non-E as "Recreational Fuel", but now any station in Fla can sell it !
Yes, it is a bit more expensive, but I feel that the benefits to the engine and fuel system along with better power band and mileage, more than make up for the price.
