I took my Xfire in for service and was recomended to replace belt,idler pulley and belt tensionor. i was quoted 750.00 for this.I balked and was hoping to do this myself.
First how hard is it to replace these parts, second where are they located and where do I purchase them. Any and all advise is wecomed.

 

Not hard at all. You will need the following tools :
17 mm socket
Torx male and female socket set

1. remove the fan ( 2 clips on top, connector on drivers side, wiggle thru the various hoses, none need to be disconnected )
2. use the 17 mm on the extruded boss of the tensioner to relieve tension and remove the belt.
3. the idler pulley has a plastic cover over the bolt, pop it off and remove/replace it.
4. the tensioner pulley assembly is attached by 2 Torx bolts, remove them and replace it.

put it all back together.

$154 for all three parts at Rockauto. Look under 2003 Mercedes SLK320 / Belt Drive / Belt Drive Component Kit .

I would stay away from that dealer, that is an outrageous price for that work! First, I would ask why they recommend replacing these parts, how many miles on the car? If truly needed, then follow the advise in the previous post, you can do this work yourself.

 

for reference.... any idea of the torque settings on these bolts? Are we good just to tighten until snug? I'm concerned about the trajectory of the belt being precise to prevent squealing of the new parts.

 

Idler pulley - 15 FtP
Tensioner Pulley bolts - 18 FtP

 

I replaced my belt tensioner, idler pulley and belt myself. INCLUDING running to the store to get the belt (which cracked as I removed it) and removing and reinserting the fan - I was done in 58 minutes. And Im not mechanically inclined.

Tensoiner was $90, belt $15 and pulley $18
