Default Rubbery clutch to no clutch

2004 crossfire suddenly stopped shifting. It felt like I was stretching a large rubber band. When the motor was running, it would not go into gear, but the car would move if I kept pressure on the shifter. When the car was off, it shifted easily.
I found a similar another post, and bled the slave cylinder until it ran clear (4-5 cycles...) - between bleeds, we had to pump the clutch a few times to get pressure. I also did the brakes for good measure, and refilled the reservoir. Let it sit overnight, and the reservoir was down a bit so put in another 1/4 can of DOT4. No change, so bled the slave 1x to ensure no air, and now the clutch peddle moves freely with no resistance.

No fluid or other gunk on the master, and video showed the slave dry as well (dirty, but dry). I'm thinking the master is shot. We already have the lower dash out.

Looking for tips on changing out the master (if that is the issue), or any other ideas or suggestions,

Update : changed out the master cylinder, let everything sit while I was out of town, and bled the system while under pressure
I can see the slave moving and pressing on the diaphragm, but the car still will not shift into gear once it is running ... any idea would be appreciated

Further update .... some of the 'fingers' on the diaphragm spring are bent inwards, so this would not allow the entire friction pad to be moved away from the engine (i.e. the transmission is always receiving power). Guess it is time for a full on clutch replacement since things have to come apart!

ya, when the fingers on the pressure plate are worn would be time for a new clutch and pressure plate.

how many miles do you have on it?

I have seen some here have to replace between 50k -240k miles depending on driving habbits.

It is a 2004, with 107k miles. We picked it up a year ago for our son. Checked & replaced all the basics - brakes, shocks, coolant, sludge that was oil at one time

He learned on my RX8, so its not a matter of skill - just probably clutch age and hard use from an eager 17yr old. He says the Crossfire shifting is easier

Hectic here too ... son doesn't have the $$ for a new clutch kit, so he was looking into picking one up from a junk yard as a temp until he could save enough. maybe the black friday sales will find one in his price range

Until then, the drive shaft is disconnected, bolts are out, only thing holding it in place is the jack and mount/bracket.....

New clutch is in, fixed the problem!

Now to keep the car running - it starts occasionally. When it does start, we can get it to run for maybe 5 minutes before it quits, and won't restart for a while. It's been sitting for maybe 3 months without running - not sure if that makes a difference
