Default Exhaust noise (no not a nice noise)

Hi all I think i am having a problem with my exhuast , when i start the car it runs fine ,But after about 2-3 miles their is a noise from the centre area around the exhuast pipe area ,I have checked to see if any thing has worked loose ( all is very tight) , it sound like a hammer drill (or the big ends have gone ). starts about 1500 revs & goes faster with more revs , I think the noise is coming from inside the exhuast pipes from one of the small boxes in the centre area . Has anyone had the same problem

Cheers

Andy

OH dear...sounds expensive...thank you for your advice though, do you know if a main dealer part only or can you get them from a normal exhaust supplier? Has anyone else had to replace one of these or am I just unlucky with this?

Check out the damaged Crossfire's on ebay i.e breakers yards. I've seen a few resently with a telephone number to call and check parts available. If I were you and the cats are available, I would try and deal for the pair, you have one down and maybe the other to follow!
Ken.

If it's a catalytic converter check your warranty and laws for emission warranties. Here in the US a catalytic converter is covered under warranty by law for 8 years or 80,000 miles. Not sure how it is in the UK though.

Hi all
warranty covers 3 years/60000 miles (robby363) . the main dealer is asking for £746.00 + vat thats just for the centre pipe assy . talking to the chaps at work they are telling me just take the pipe off the car & knock the loose bits out , so stopping the the noise ,but will this stop me passing the next MOT , Think i have found a centre pipe assy off Ebay ,there is a Crossfire breaking up north ,just went on Ebay today full front & rear damage (cat B) so only for spares .

Hi Slider955i I replaced the full middle pipes (all 4 CATS), But when we got the car on the ramps , The guy knocked the middle cats & it sound like loose bits inside , so as the car has only done 21k miles i can only put down to a poorly put together Cat assy . I have kept the old pipes & thinking about replacing the Cats . you can buy the Cats by them selfs ,

I have heard of this being a problem on the SLK 32 MB. Happend to someone I know and MB replaced the Cats under warranty. Thing is, and please hold onto something solid, they replaced the entire engine as well. Dunn'o why but that's what happened.

Hi AndyG Funny you should say that ( or not ) , the guy at the exhuast place was saying that there must be a reason to make the Cats break down . but when i rung the main dealer he said yes the rear Cats ( in the middle of the car) are the ones that break down first , Well all can do is if this exhaust starts to break down i need to look deeper.

I think everybody has that squeak. I certainly have; try it with the handbrake off and in P or with wheels chocked. It's handbrake related I'll bet.

Thumbs up Re: Exhaust noise (no not a nice noise)

took my car in today and they have informed me that 3 cats are damaged and so he has ordered 4 for it which should arrive and be fitted tomorrow.

he said he would have to send some pics of the wheel centres (to chrysler i presume) and this would probaby take a couple of weeks to resolve

he did not mention the squeak but i did ask him to have a look so will find out tomorrow

also there was a recall on my car and this was for a replacement radiator fan which will also be sorted

impressed with the service and politeness so far

took it too the main merc/daimler/jeep/chrysler garage in woverhampton, westmidlands

there were 3 300c cars on their forecourt which looked bloody awesome apart from the fact they deserve larger alloys

You are covered under warranty even after 3 years.

Had mine replaced last year thinking that I was going to have to pay £800 cos I was out of warranty but ther dealer said it's covered under some kind of engine warranty.

DO NOT PAY TO HAVE FIXED

I too had the dreaded rattle soon after picking my car up (it's a 55 plate with 20k on the clock). I optimistically hoped it was just a case of the heat shield rattling, but the more I listened the more I realised that I was kidding myself.

It normally occurred when warm and at about the 1400rpm mark only. When moving slowly in traffic, it felt like a steel drum band was following me

I took the car to my local dealer who booked me in to have the work done the following week. Although it appeared to be just one cat, they didn't want to take any chances and replaced both sides of the entire forward section of the exhaust system under warranty, I must say, this impressed me.

Hi keels

just keep an eye on ebay , There always someone breaking , Also try custom exhaust maker in area your area they could be less than OEM part , you cold ask them just to replace the CAT parts as you can buy them by themselfs , could end up with a better exhaust setup . , I have kept my old pipes for this very reason .

Cheers

Andy
