Default Thinking of Buying a Crossfire - need help and advice

Hello all,

I have just sold my VW Golf and need a new car.

I love the look, style and shape of the crossfire and I am also very keen due to its price for a second hand model.

I was a member of a VW forum - ukmkivs.com - where I learnt many How-to's and picked up lots of other info.

I am interested in hearing how you - Crossfire owners who drive this car day in day out think about this car.

My budget is £10,000 and I have my heart set on either a BMW 3 Series coupe or the Crossfire.

Also what is the best crossfire to go for in the range? I am inclined towards the automatic.

I love the look of the coupe but also like the convertible.

What mpg should I except? What are the running costs of the vehicle? Are their any common major faults - ie gearbox, water pump?

Any help would be really appreciated.

Many thanks

Yass

If you expected us to tell you not to get it you came to the wrong place!

I drive mine every day, rain or shine, snow or sun. Best car I've ever owned!

Price permitting, (I'm not sure of the price on your side of the pond) you want a SRT-6.

MPG varies....not too bad if you keep your foot out of the gas. I have a limited roadster, with a 6 speed manual, I get around 23 MPG......but I have it floored a lot!

Price of upkeep is a little high.......basically a Crossfire is a Mercedes Benz slk320 with a Chrysler body on it. All the mechanical parts are straight from mercedes basically.

Not many problems to report.....sometimes IC pump failure on the SRT's, heated seat lowers like to fail on all of 'em, and the cupholder sucks eggs!

Just go out and buy one.........you'll love it.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

Whats the difference between the coupe 3.2 and the srt-6?

Hows the auto box on the crossfire - does it have a tip tronic function?

Thanks

They have the same displacement.

The SRT just has beefier internals.............AND A SUPERCHARGER!

stock 3.2 = 215 Horsepower
SRT 3.2 = 330 Horsepower

The autostick has a manual mode. I don't know much about it, like I said, I have a stick.

Hope this helps.

Lol thats a massive increase in BHP

relatively how much more expensive is the SRT in % format?

I think the insurance on the srt may be to high for me.

Over here, the srt's are going for anywhere from $3,000 to $10,000 over the price of a base or limited, depending on mileage.

I looked at one local to me for $17,900 with 5000 miles on it. It was in beautiful shape too.

As I said though, I'm not sure how much car you can buy over there for the money.

Basically, you'll be happy with any Crossfire, but you'll be REALLY happy with a SRT6!

Oh yea.....the ladies love a convertible too!

Hi.

The Crossfire is the cheapest head turner out there. Get the BMW to blend in, get the Crossfire and standout. I think you will have more fun in the Crossfire. Test one out.

Cheers

Hi Yass, I had a normal Crossfire and I canged it for the SR-T last year, the standard cross fire is plenty good enough, reliability wise its a mercedes so they are going to be reliable.

What i have found after three years on owning crossfires is that everybody likes the look of them, they are real head turners unlike bmw's which unless its a M3 look bland

Yass006

Jon is correct in his views and there are some cracking bargains to be had at the moment...don't rush the dealer will bend over backwards to sell a Xfire to you..so push hard for the deal you want.

Also remember that if it's regestered after early 2006..then the vehicle tax is £400.00! ..slighter earlier and the tax is at least £100.00 cheaper.

Where are you located in the UK? Do you fancy a Christmas lunch with our Xfire group Dec7th? see posts for full details

Just to let you guys know all our road tax will be £430 from 2010.
I have a 2004 and it will go up to £300 next April and then up to £430 the year after even though all the roads are full off pot holes.
I thought about selling because of this but I would be lucky to get about £9000 for the car now and what could I buy for that?
I just had a salesman at the door asking if the Bentley was mine.LOL. .

Hi Yass006,
I use my Crossfire every day and am doing about 12k per year. I opted for the extended warranty ( info in another post ). I have a 12 mile drive to work, mostly fast B roads a couple of dual carriageways and have a heavy right foot. I am getting 22 MPG, but you could get better. Servicing is not bad, £240 for the first three then there is an expensive one ( my next , I'm told about £550) if you take it to the dealers ( like I do ).

The one to watch out for is rear tyres, the previous owner got 20,000 out of all 4, with my style of driving only got 10,000 out of the rears. I calculate that at 4.5p per mile just for the rear tyres !!! But they do look great ! I have just imported low dust brake pads for £100 for all 4 and fitted them myself.

The only weakness I am aware of is the heated seat. They seem to go on most , including mine ( fixed under warranty)

Other than that as other folk have said all the oily bits are Mercedes and I am expecting it to be reliable.

I do like that it is a bit quick and is a nice easy relaxing drive. The computers can just sort of take over and make your life easy when you want to, such as greasy roads in the winter and a short wheelbase rear wheel drive can need a bit of concentration in other cars. But when you want to have fun, you can. I have the auto with "tiptronic".

cheers,

Paul

Hey guys,

thanks for all the replies.

Im definately buying one, test drove one today and i loved it.

Now the question is what can i get for my money and where should i buy it from. Hopefully the UK users on the forum can help me out.

Ive got £7500-£8000 to spend.

On ebay and autotrader their are coupe's of 30k miles, auto going for £7500. Should I buy one privately or go to an independant or to chrysler dealer?

Whats are the best ways to negotiate the price down?

And apart from checking the heated seats is their anything else I need to look out for when buying second hand?

Also at what mileage is it considered a "high mileage" ideally i would like 20k-30k miles max.

Thanks

Yass

Hi Yass, i would'nt have thought that main dealeras would have crossfires at that age and millage so you will need to buy privatley, there's some nice ones on e-bay, dont rush in, keep looking, there was one for 7500 with 23k recently, just ensure FSH you will be fine
