Default Which GPS do you recommend?

I want to buy a GPS and I don't know enough about them to know which one is better than any other one. What is everyone's recommendation for a good unit? I want one that will also run on batteries.
Thanks,
Toy

I and 3 friends have different Garmin units and we all love them. Easy to use and all run on battery.
Just use the one with the options you want and the price you like. I got the cheapest I could find as I don't need an MP3 player etc.

Just bought a TomTom GO720 about 3 months ago. Love it. It's $300 at Sam's Club.

Hey John,
I recently purchased a Tom Tom One third edition from Walmart for $140.00. Bang for the buck it's great! Easy downloads, great size and very easy to learn. Christi uses it all of the time for her appointments.

Look at an issue of Consumer Reports or you can join them online. They rate almost all of the GPS units. The 3 that they rate as a best buy on a budget are:

TomTom XLS $350.00
TomTom One 3rd. Edition $250.00
Garin Nuvi 200 $250.00

I got the Garmin Nuvi 350 online at pcrush.com for $325 including shipping and saved about $70. over Best Buy and Circuit City. Don't buy more features than you need. Good Luck

I have a Tomtom ONE 130 (The newest model, comes after the Third edition) from work that is good enough for my basic needs, and it's under $150 at amazon. It runs on a built in rechargable battery or off a car charger, but I don't think it will run long off of the internal battery, a couple of hours at most.

I also have the TomTom GO720 and I really like it. It does have more options than I need though such as bluetooth. Maybe I should try the bluetooth feature with my phone, It may better than I think.
I purchased mine off the internet when I had a $100.00 rebate form, right before Christmas. I don't remember which website I bought it from but after my rebate I only paid 249.00.

The newer version, the Garmin Nuvi 360 with bluetooth is $239.99 shipped with no sales tax here:

Look at Amazon.com, got a Garmin 660 for $305+Shipping. Blue tooth, mp3, verbal street info and provides red light camera intersection and fixed radar locations. also provides traffic delays with alternative routes to avoid delays. Rechargable battery plus all of the standard hook ups. Love it....

It took me a while to find the sale page, so here it is for anyone else looking for it:

Amazon Fathers' Day GPS Sale <--- Link

(I tried to follow my own link a few hours later and it didn't work. Here's a new one trying again...)

You really have to watch these GPS companies. They're snake oil salesmen on the lower priced GPS (less than $1000). I presently have 3 Garmins (Etrex Vista handheld, a Street Pilot 550c in car and a Quest for my ATV). The handheld does exactly as advertised. The 550c came with a three year old out dated map info. When I called to complain, they said I needed to buy the $80 extra chip for current info! I finally bought it and it made a huge difference.

The best story is the ATV - Gramin Quest GPS. When I bought the ATV I called the company that made the ATV and I called Garmin and they both assured me it was made for off road use. When I got home I took it into the woods and all it showed was blank space - no rivers, ponds or terrain info. So I called Garmin again and they said "you need to buy the $80 chip!" I asked for the supervisor and wanted a guarrante that it would should relief info. He told me no, it wasn't designed for off road!

I have had similar problems with Magellan. I used Tom Tom once and wasn't impressed. I have an expensive Garmin marine GPS and it does a good job. These problems burn my butt because I have used military gps and they do a great job.
