If this was several feet long it could have been an "oversized package."
These have a minimum weight charge so if your length + girth is > 108 inches or more you will be charged for 70 lbs; 84-108" is 30 lbs.
Look on the shipping label and see if it says "OS1" or "OS2".

i would think that anything in-state is going to get there the next day anyways...unless the package is leaving the panhandle and headed for the Keys.

another factor: was this shipped at a UPS store, or at another place of business that just happens to ship UPS? if it was shipped from a non-UPS retailer, then THEY screwed you, UPS didn't.

okay, i see it's a 9 hour drive...but i still think sending this UPS ground would have gotten it there the next day anyways.

Exclamation Re: rip me off UPS

'Cobb is right.

Another 2 points to ponder:

I'm sure that everyone has heard that all airlines are restricting passengers to 1checked bag @ 50 pounds or less and charging for overages?

This is to open up cargo space that UPS, FedEx and their ilk rents for these very same "Overnight" deliveries. It is more economical for them but less conveient for passengers. They don't have to courier small packages on their own carriers.

I checked at their web site, and next day with $500 insurance and 10am guaranteed delivery should have been $92.73 ($65.60 + $4.50 ins + $22.63 fuel surchg). If you had shipped next day guaranteed by noon, the cost is %54.40, and by end of day $50.36. Perhaps it was a few more $$ for sig required.
