Do not, I repeat:


DO NOT declaw a cat, unless you absolutely want an angry cat all the time, especially females.

Cats use their claws to protect themselves from threats.
If you declaw one, and then have it live in a household with other cats that still have their claws, you are going to have one very unhappy cat. And it WILL take its anger out on YOU.

As for getting feral cats to calm down, as others have said, just leave them to their own devices in your house, but every time you see them, talk to them, and be gentle with them. They will come around pretty quick, as they are watching you all the time, and will sooner or later figure out that you're in charge of things, and aren't a threat.

I think many vets would disagree. Declaw the front paws only and the cats can defend themselves just fine. Don't declaw and they will tear your stuff apart. Leaving you looking for a solution.

Claws don't stop shotgun pellets.

Mine leaves nice skid marks on my thighs when she wants my attention. All she has is her rear ones.
She still climbs trees.
And terrorizes the grandkid's dog.

Thelma & Louise are not declawed and have not destoryed a thing in my house, I trained therm at a very young age, with a squirt gun and a stern voice to not claw the furniture and provided them with a scratching pad... got to give them something to scratch!!

They are now grown and know to only scratch the pad or outside on a tree. Their claws have never even been so much as trimmed by me... and trust me those are lethal weapons!!

 

Fine then. You asked how to handle wild cats. I'm just sayin' front declawed kittens are easier to handle and give away.

Everyone has their preference but cat scratches are not pleasant, or safe, for human children.

You have me scared. I have three living in my back yard and have everything set up this weekend to trap them and get them to the vet. Three red/orange colored feral kittens abandoned by their mother. Hence they are the O'Ferals.

Will my welding gloves be sufficient? (very, very thick leather !) Hey better yet, you have experience...wanna visit Sacramento? A great drive !! The twisty road to Tahoe is a great run.

Good Luck with the kittens, after all that care and loving how can you give them up? Such innocence and maybe a little attitude.

Your welding gloves should do the trick, make sure that the area between the gloves and your elbows is protected... that is where all my damage is!! I am making progress with them, am now able to pick up each one, though they still want to hiss, I am thinking soon they will get out of that and off to the pound they go, driving me crazy at the moment!!!! LOL

 

Update on the FORMERLY Wild Kittens..... I managed to tame them all in a two week time frame!!!

I took them to the animal shelter, where they were given shots and put up for adoption, of course I had to cry about it all the way home, really hated to get rid of them.... but, as cute as they were I'm sure they will get a good home.
