Default Miramar Airshow

The local Marine air station in San Diego, MCAS Miramar, hosted its annual airshow a month ago. A little tardy with the pics here.

As expected there were the ususal aircraft on display along with various military vehicles. Since this is the centennial year of navy flight many of the aircraft were painted in color schemes used decades ago.

The Marines took over Miramar from the navy years ago but have kept hosting the airshow. The navy always held the show in August and fortunately the Marines moved it till Sep/Oct. Even so, the day was warm as you can tell by the number of people seeking shade.

Alrighty, the pics didn't post. Will try this again.

Like any good military airshow the military had to "show off" with parachute drops and a simulated ground attack. The Marines sure do have a lot of helicoptors. Throw in a Harrier and Osprey and they gave the best show.

The Air Force was there with an F-16, proving once again the the F-16 is the loudest jet in the world. Not to be out done the Navy sported a Hornet. By the way, neither jet was overhead in the pics. The Hornet retracting its gear was actually performing a roll and both jets were flying sideways a number of times.

I should note that the flying was done along the runway. Grandstands were set up beside the runway and behind the stands were the static displays, vendors, and those of us who didn't make it to the stands.

Both Air Force and Navy held heritage flights. The AF had a P-51 team up with the F-16 and the Navy did the same with a Bearcat and Hornet.

The real star though was Fat Albert, the C-130 support plane for the Blue Angels. Its one thing to watch a fighter bank through turns, quite another for a four engine cargo plane to do the same.

Naturally the Blue Angels performed. Added a couple of pics with the ground in view just to show how low and close they came. As always, they put on quite the performance.
