It is just because of situations like this that I regularly take my two Anatolian Shepherds by our local police station on my daily walks to make sure the police KNOW the dogs and KNOW that they mean no one any harm.
A couple of months ago, I stupidly left the gate open and the male ( @200 pounds ) took a walk and found some neighbor's cats which immediately climbed up a tree. The neighbor call the police, they called me and when I showed up the officer had a rope tied to Dakota's collar and was petting him and telling the lady what a nice dog he was. No harm done, just scared the cat owner to death.

I can't believe any officer of the law would shoot a dog in cold blood. We carry tasers, pepper spray, and a boot for self defense. Hell, we have animal control officers at our disposal. If that doesn't work, we have conservation officers that will assist...what idiots...I hope they are no longer in the profession.
As with all creatures, not all are created equal. This is a prime example.

Did you forget or quit everything you did when you retired. NO you didn't. You are still a pita... I still have all the tools. Just no where to use them right now. Shoulder should be 100% by summer time, and we will see where we go from there. Not totally ready to completely give it up yet. Of course the shoulder may force me out as it did recently. Which was more political than medical. That's another story. Several depts. around for an ole' pita to patrol the streets looking for Canadian plates to pick on. I have worked in the county for 35 yrs. Not hard to find something to do when ready. Or not. That's the nice part. There are 7 police depts. and the county. I have worked for 2 of those depts. and the county. I am thinking of the neighboring county. It's rural, and I miss that... I can visit with farmers while patrolling. LOL... But, you never really give it up...
I was just thinking about when I started back in the 70's, there were only 29 officers in the whole county counting the 7 towns and the county. We had 1 State Trooper assigned to the county. We all knew each other. We all backed each other up when needed. Now there is just shy of 1000 police personnel in the county. Very few of us old guys left on the street for good reason. We are old. Many are in management or retired, but still serving in other capacities. I still like to teach, so we shall see what out there for a few more years. I won't be a dog catcher though. Too old to chase dogs, and I like dogs so I won't shoot them...

You could always just chase kids around the food court. Doc Blart....Mall Cop....got a ring to it. It would be warm in winter and AC in summer.
Don't even get me started on Canadian truck drivers....we will be on here all night shooting jabs at each other.....I'm going to bed. I got to work again....4 month rest is over...leaving at 3 am....later....keep Dave in line will ya?
