Default Dream Cruise Underway!

There is nothing in the world like the Woodward Dream Cruise in the suburbs of Detroit. Every year, 40,000 classic cars cruise the strip on the day of the cruise. 1.7 million people attend. And, the big three (plus many other companies) join in the fun. Chrysler even builds a limited edition PT every year (the Dream Cruiser) to mark the event. It's happening on Saturday, but already the street is jammed at night with classics. I went last night in my Crossfire. I saw a few other Crossfires, along with many beautiful old muscle cars, a few vintage sports cars, and even a handful of recent Ferraris. It's really fun to see the different tastes and choices that people have in their love of automobiles. I even saw one particularly unusual hot rod - an old milk or delivery truck that had a chopped top, dropped suspension, and beautiful silver and flame paint job. It had wide rear tires, a great V8 burble, and was just about the coolest thing imaginable.

We went Wednesday night in our '61 Impala. I only saw 1 red XF Roadster, hundreds of classic cars (I think the Vettes out number the other types) and quite a few "weird" vehicles that are hard to put into any other category. We took lots of pictures, maybe next week I'll have time to post some.
The Woodward Dream Cruise is definitely bringing in the best car buffs. The high gas prices don't seem to bother anyone here!

Those old Impalas are beautiful cars. I saw a black coupe the other day that looked just like the below.

I love the curved windshield. I can't think of a single car company that would spend the money on something like windshields with complex curves these days. But back then, GM put them on everything - even their pickups had wraparound windshields. It was a time when high style was as important as the bottom line.

Fast forward to today, and note that America's best selling car is the generic looking, completely boring Camry. Sure, it gets lots of red dots in Consumer Reports. But, I think there is no doubt that we lost something over the years. Could you imagine someone dumping a boatload of cash into a Camry, and cruising the strip in it, forty years from now?

If you go to the Crossfire couple forums, I have posted some pics in there. If you want to see all my pics, PM me and I'll send them to you. I didn't take the Crossfire, but I did see several out there though. The weather kinda sucked, but all in all, it was a good time.
