Lurking and learning, before the journey on Xfire ownership.


The wife's Niece is planning on selling me her Xfire. Little is known about it right now other than a roadster with electrical issues. Issues like only CHMBL working, mystery no-start.


it's in Jacksonville, FL and I'm in Indy. Plan to "rush" down to scoop it up, but don't want "issues" coming home.


I'll report back when more info is known or return trip is scheduled.......

Little more info: Color believe to be Sapphire Silver Blue. Brother-in-law "messed" with top, cause it wouldn't go down. I'm sure he f'ed up something cause he don't fix nothing right.

I guess I got some fixing to do. I can fix most stuff, so I guess I looking for the challenge.

Mileage and year still unknown, but I think it's a 2005.

 

He only "messed" with the top because it refused to go up and down on command - a common issue, but nothing to panic over. MOST of the time, the fix is not too involved or expensive - PROVIDED you don't have water in a wheel well or leaking cylinder(s).

In extreme cases, people just raise and lower the top manually and forget about fixing the system.

I've had a few instances in owning three of these cars where the top refused to move. One was the famous divider switch, one was a jammed and not-completely-closed trunklid. The last time, it was a dying battery; the airbad module was destroyed at the same time. No issues since I changed the battery, but now I need an airbag module.

OK, it's a 2005. Has 100,000+ miles, mystery no start and only one key.

Seems all fixable. timing on ownership still up in the air.

 

I'll be in Jax Thursday, shame you may not be in town. I have a spare RCM that could be used to rule that out. Let me know when you're headed down to pick it up. I can always use any excuse to head up there and visit my grandma!

Now looking at the weekend of the 27th to "go get it".

Current info: 110,600 miles. Newer battery, needs oil change. Not sure of color. Could be Machine Gray.

I picked up a oil filter (Mann Filter - Amazon), Mobil One oil 0W-40, plus a list of stuff to take with (coming from Indy).

I'll try to post pictures.

 

 

 

 

Currently on the hunt for the "crush" washer for the oil drain plug. Hope to find local. Anybody have a part number or source?

Should I tackle the fuel filter before the 1,100 mile drive home? Any "special" tools needed, or can I cut and clamp my way thru it?

I'm sure brakes are next, as well as a through cleaning. My wife's Niece is "NOT" a car person.

Maybe I should re-title this story as "Crosscountry for a Crossfire"!!!

 

You can re-use the washer with care until you can get some from Rob at NeedsWings.
( I did, then replaced it. Now I use a TopSider and don't remove the plug )
Might be a good idea to get some gasoline hose and small screw clamps before tackling the filter.
The ethanol in the fuel tends to deteriorate the OEM hoses.
( yes, you can cut and clamp your way through it -
Rob has the fuel filter too at $49.95 - comes with clamps )

How long until you start that 1,100 mile drive ?

 

"Air Filter", make sure it can breath on that long journey. Hope you have a good ride. If your running I-75, lots of good people along the way. Give a shout as you passing through!

 

You will need a new cabin filter and to clean any leaves out of the cowl when you get home.
