Woodcliff Lake, NJ - December 15, 2007, 6PM EST... BMW will once again introduce a ground-breaking idea to the world and the creation of a new segment with the debut of its all-new X6 Sports Activity Coupe at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show in January. The all-new vehicle redefines the very notion of a coupe -- with five doors and four sculpted seats, a higher ride and loads of cargo space. It defies coupe conventions in one jaw-dropping look, combining coupe agility and SAV versatility, taking the coupe to a higher level.

As the world's first Sports Activity Coupe, the BMW X6 will be available in two engine variants: the xDrive50i (4.4 V8 engine, 400 hp, 450 lb.-ft torque) and the xDrive35i (3.0 inline six-cylinder engine, 300 hp, 300 lb.-ft torque), both with Twin Turbo and direct injection. The BMW X6 offers unique features and performance ability in a combination unmatched by any other vehicle. The new BMW X6's design combines the sporting elegance of a large BMW Coupe with the powerful presence of a BMW X model.

Well, I kind of like it - it has a nice agressive stance to it but isn't hulking like an SUV. Crossovers sell, X3s and X5s sell, and the Porsche tunaboat SUVs sell, so why not this? I personally think the slope of the roof defeats the purpose of the back doors but I don't see any real reason why this wouldn't sell well.

Looks odd. Would be asthetically pleasing if it had bigger tires.

I used to *love* BMW's styling, but the new body style leaves me cold. Its just too funky -- kinda like both ends got stretched to the middle. I much prefer this style:

Why don't they just call it an SUV?

LOL... I'm still trying to figure the auto-industry out:

SUV's were for folks that weren't fond of cars, or needed more utility. Fuel economy and maneuverability were the only compromises. I understand that auto trend completely.

Crossover SUVs were for folks who were either too short for SUVs, or didn't quite need as much cargo room, yadda yadda. Slightly better fuel economy and maneuverability. I can even understand that trend.

NOW we have the X6. Is this for folks that can't decide between a car and a Crossover?!?! I mean, honestly, the difference between a crossover and a car is on differentiated by ride height, IMO. Look at Ford Freestyle versus the Ford Taurus... The Freestyle is nothing but a tall station wagon.

If you have a crossover that is "shorter" and more stylized... you essentially have a tall-*** car with horrid roll-center stability. Right? And handling/low RCG is something that BMW has been famous for for years.

I simply don't get it. It's like saying, "The 3-Series is nice, but I only need room for ONE MORE grocery bag. But I don't need enough additional room to justify an SUV, so... Let's get an X-6!!!"

Unbelievable.

I have to admit I kind of like it too. But then I like the style BMW's had a couple car generations ago, so my tastes might be suspect. I would never by one though, it serves no practical purpose, and I already have one car that fills that role.

Eh. It will sell. You can slap a BMW badge on anything and reviewers will ooh and ah over it.

Ditto...The want-a-be's/herd mentality will buy it just to have a BMW.

I must be more accepting of things as I get older. I really don't think the Bimmer looks that bad. It even has 4 doors, and that usually turns me off immediately.
Maybe they were shooting for a "Retro Look".

I do have a problem with the statement, "BMW will once again introduce a ground-breaking "IDEA" to the world" though.

If I had to guess, I would say that this vehicle is aimed at the "baby boomers".

Those of us who want style but can't quite bend down like we used to to get into a low slung coupe. The ability to sit a little more upright than leaned back. A large enough stowage area for carrying those walkers, wheelchairs and boxes of wheaties on those jaunts to the supermarket.

Something that proides a comfortable, stylish, cocoon-like environment without being the size of the Queen Mary. A BMW that caters to that group of people who would never buy a Cadillac or Lincoln, but do want the comfort and capacity.

But that is just my opinon.

Older and slower, but still able to contort my way into an SRT6 coupe and lovin' it!

It's fairly simple really. Station wagons stopped being cool in the eyes of the consuming public, and mini vans took on a bad "soccer mom" stigma years ago. So people moved to these stupid huge SUVs because they sit up nice and high and can see the road better (why they keep rear ending people is another matter...but I digress). With the rise in gas prices SUVs are now deemed to be expensive and, gasp, environmentally unfriendly. So what's a family with a little kid to do? You can't buy a station wagon because they aren't cool (Audi A6 Avant, Dodge Magnum R/T, BMW 5 or 3 Series, Mercedes E55, etc just get lumped into the "uncool" group because people are stupid), you can't buy a mini van because they aren't cool (even though they drive like a car, let you sit up nice and high, and offer a rediculous amount of space inside, they get lumped into the "uncool" group because people are stupid) so what's left? A crossover, of course. It's the evolutionary step from the SUV back to the station wagon, without the stigma of either. Sort of a mini van with a lower roof and less room inside.

At least, being a BMW, the X6 will most likely be an engaging drive. Not something you can say about either a Tahoe or Odyssey. But what this really offers over a 5 Series sedan is beyond me. Give me a proper CAR every time, but if I need to haul more stuff, give me a nice car with some cargo room. Give me a station wagon. I'm fine with a Magnum R/T. Oh, wait, Chrysler is killing it and giving us...the Journey. A crossover. Gee, thanks.

I don't know, it isn't too godawful ugly though I agree with Electric about the wee, little tires, makes it look like an Escort. Though 400 or 300 horses ain't sneezly, either! But, just what the heck is a Sport's 'Activity' Vehicle? Sounds like something I'd give to my granddaughter "here, honey, go play with your activity center now". Marketing...
