Bought me a beater today - Volvo S40
I've been looking around for a reliable car to take over daily driving duties in order to keep the mileage low on my XF. Also, I really don't like subjecting the Crossfire to the elements and the gas mileage is a little better.
After some online searching a happened upon an '05 S40 T5 (2.5 liter - 5 cylinder Turbo) with 121K miles for $1,500. The seller, a law student, didn't want to spend over 3 grand to the Volvo stealership to replace a bad motor mount, alternator, or change the timing belt out that's due.
The car is in very good shape otherwise, and she accepted my $1,400 offer.
The parts total around $500, so hopefully for $1,900 I'll have a realiable and quick daily driver that should do fine in the snow.
Anyway, I've parked the Volvo in my garage and plan to start work on it as soon as the parts arrive. First impressions are this is a quick, well handling, and comfortable car. Hopefully the repairs go off without a hitch.

Thanks. I'll post the progress, good or bad.
It was crazy cold out when I washed it, 44F.
I hate to admit it, but you're probably right. I'm sure I'll at least have a tune on it once all the issues are ironed out.
Thanks
Thanks
Swedish Vulva at that.

Considering everything she didn't want to repair, I hope she took care of the regular maintenance like oil changes. But that looks like a great find!
I was thinking the same thing. I pulled the oil filler cap and the rockers looked very clean and the dip stick showed fairly new oil, but you never know.
Ordered parts today to get the S40 on the road.
Alternator - $170
Timing belt, tensioner, idler pulley, and water pump - $125
Motor mount - $65
Total so far: $360 shipped

grip2 - With that $360 plus another hundred or so to replace all fluids and you'll have a beater better than most folks DD for under $2K. Very well done!
Hope that you'll use that law student for any future legal needs you may have. Good Karma.

You stole it for that price. I've had three Volvos, and can tell you that well maintained these cars run for ever.Good luck with it.
Looks like a great find Anthony. I have also had turbo Volvos in the past and agree with FP. They have a good ride quality and are built for the long haul. You certainly have a talent for finding things at very good prices. Can you do that on ski vacations out west?
It's DOHC. I have it mostly apart, just waiting on the parts now.
Here's how the Volvo looks today:

At least it's not TOO tight in there lol. I hate timing belts. Somehow I shredded mine in an integra when I was 16 and it was fine :O. The tear down and timing was a pain though... Then again, your crazy *** can get the diff out and back in like me changing out a wheel lol.
Mission accomplished.
$1,400 - Car
$275 - Alternator (cheap one didn't fit)
$185 - Motor mount and antifreeze (cheap one didn't fit)
$125 - Timing belt, tensioner, water pump, idler
$35 - Compressor and Alternator belts
Total: $2,020
I've driven it around 30 miles today and it's running great. Hopefully nothing falls apart anytime soon.
