( This is first gen NW single CAI, I think the newer one has it's own housing for the MAF that does the 90 degree transition ....

well, the MAF is a full 6mm wider opening, just like the TB. the intake manifold is already 74mm and so is the elbow. By replacing both, you'v just smoothened out the air flow. No step up and down between each components

If you are retaining that plastic MAF part, of course upgrade to 74mm, but in the case of the NW CAI this does not apply.

This does not apply to NW CAI. A NW comes with it's own low turbulance MAF elbow.
I currently am fabing my own custom CAI from a plumbing kit found on Ebay:
