Removing the steering wheel
OK I'm tired of the stock wheel and will be replacing it with a black suede momo wheel. I just can't stand the hand grip positions of the stock wheel anymore. I would appreciate it if someone who has completed this project before to speak up with any tips or suggestions.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Max, it's a good thought but you'll end-up with cosmetic issues with the housing for turn signal, wiper arms. That housing is a round cup behind the wheel that is sized to the diameter of the OEM wheel and hides all the switches / wiring inside it.
You will also illuminate the airbag light on your dash when you remove it.
If you want to see what it would look like, remove the airbag housing via 3 screws behind the spokes of the wheel. Then in the center of the steering wheel is a large allen head bolt that holds the wheel in place. The step by step directions are in the repair manual.
Once you remove the wheel, you will see the cup that contains all the wiring and switches. And if you install an aftermarket wheel like the one pictured, you'll have a big gap around the wheel that exposes all that stuff.
If you decide to pursue this, make sure you find a wheel that has the same threads / key way as the mercedes, otherwise you'll have to weld a spud onto the tip of your steering column to fit the new wheel onto.

I really like the look of the mercedes SLK32 AMG Steering wheel... more of a square design, with better grips. Since Crossfires and SLKs are virtually identical, would this work out okay? Or would there still be gaps?
Thanks for the information there HDDP, I have no issues with matching out parts to make it all fit together. I will tear into it today and check things out, and see what needs to be adjusted.
I like the idea of using the AMG wheel if it's plug and play, but I'm sure MBZ will want about $800 - $1,000 for one of those wheels.
