Default F1

So who is into F1 here? The season will start this weekend with the first race scheduled in Australia and I am excited and thrilled to see how everyone will fair this time. I am banking that Red Bull and McLaren will go at it for the first race while Ferrari will soon catch up right by the time of the Spanish Grand Prix. But if they were able to log in a lot of improvements since the last pre season testing, then that will make for a ver interesting match up.

A couple of us on here are big into F1...

Personally, I've been supporting Vettel for years, for a few reasons -- his affiliation with Infiniti, the fact that he's German, and I liked him as an underdog when he started.

After his second championship, Vettel's underdog mantra has been busted and I now blend in with the millions of new bandwagon fans.

I have immense respect and support for Hamilton. Nico Rosberg strikes me as a driver that will likely bloom within the next year or two. Schumacher is fantastic but I see him a lot like Peyton Manning, I think his next biggest wave of influence will come from the pit box instead of the driver's seat. But I would love to be wrong.

Even though I'm a RBR fan, I feel McLaren is due for a championship. And the McLaren car is the only one without that godawful hump nose.

Been into F1 since I was a teenager...followed Stewart, Fittipaldi, Andretti, Hunt, Lauda...and some of the current drivers, Button, Vettel, Hamilton, Schumacher...Looking for any Mercedes-powered car to win it all...but I haven't gotten up to speed on this coming season!

I know, right? I got home late last night, turned on the TV, looked at the leader board and blinked a few times. What the.....? Was this a rerun from 2002 or something?? Nope, that's Herr Michael at the top of the time sheets.

Of course, it was just Friday practice and the track had been soaked and then dried out, so we'll see what that it all really means a few hours from now.

Top 10 qualifiers: (spoiler..... scroll down for time sheet)

1 Lewis Hamilton McLaren-Mercedes 1:24.922
2 Jenson Button McLaren-Mercedes 1:25.074
3 Romain Grosjean Lotus-Renault 1:25.302
4 Michael Schumacher Mercedes 1:25.336
5 Mark Webber Red Bull Racing-Renault 1:25.651
6 Sebastian Vettel Red Bull Racing-Renault 1:25.668
7 Nico Rosberg Mercedes 1:25.686
8 Pastor Maldonado Williams-Renault 1:25.908
9 Nico Hulkenberg Force India-Mercedes 1:26.451
10 Daniel Ricciardo STR-Ferrari No Time

Times are from Q3 session; Ricciardo did not go out in Q3

Amazing to see Romain Grosjean in the Lotus-Renault starting third in the race, and for both he and Schumacher to be 3/10ths ahead of the Red Bulls. Also nice to see a Williams car this high up again, but a bit shocking to see both Ferraris knocked out in Q2! What a difference an offseason and rules changes makes! How long do you think it will take Kimi to come to grips with his car? Unable to advance from Q1 he qualified 17th in the same car Grosjean put on the second row.

It is said that tire management is going to be huge this year due to the compounds used by Pirelli, and last year nobody was as good at tire management through the course of a race as Jenson Button. I think this is going to be an interesting season.

I think it will be very interesting to see how Vettle copes w/not have the best car. I think he is a great driver, but he also had the best car by far last year. It will be fun to see the track fights that will happen this year. Is this finally the year of Rosberg to live up to his hype? I always enjoyed watching his dad race and win. He should win this year now that M/B has a better car. Massa really hasn't been the same man since he had the bolt to the head that almost killed him. He seemed to lose his edge. Hope he comes back for a win. You can never count Alonzo out. Ferrari will have to work their asses off to get that car to work. Kind of like McLaren did last year. I really do question Kimi R's drive to win. It is very hard to come back after two years off. He missed Q2 because of sloppiness by either him or the team. No excuse for that. Just some of my observations. It should be a great year!! I'm excited!

I have always loved F1. I first started following it about 1965. Jim Clark was may favorite driver. I also worked for the Northern California SCCA as a corner worker for 8 years. I had a permit to work any race from club races to F1. I worked the first F1 races in Long Beach and all of the ones they had in Las Vegas. I have a lot of very great memories of all of the varied race tracks I worked at; Sears Point, Laguna Seca, Vegas, Long Beach, Riverside and others. My only time I was on tv was at the 1982 LV F1 race. Here is a video clip. I am the one w/the fire bottle; the first one to Andretti's Ferrari. The announcer on tv said he lost it. His left rear suspension failed. When he first got out of the car he walked around, because he didn't know what broke. He pointed out to me. A great memory. I didn't realize it until a few months ago, but this was his last race in the F1 car. Anyway, here is the clip if you care to watch :Andretti slide las vegas 1982.wmv - YouTube

Well, that's the official site of the international motorsports governing body, the FIA. The website lildaddym linked to is indeed the official Formula 1 website, owned and managed by Formula 1. They provide live timing and scoring during races, etc.

As for the race itself..... who was it that called Button early on? Oh yeah...... ME!!!

Nice work for Vettel to finish second, but without that very late safety car it wouldn't have happened. Still, racing is also about being in the right place at the right time to take advantage of what's going on around you, so again, good for him. Really sad to see Grosjean get punted out so early on if only because it's great for the sport to see another brand running at the front.

Malaysia next weekend and I'm travelling for work - bummer. But it looks to be a great season shaping up!

Go Jenson!!!!

Go Jenson!!!!
He used official with a question mark, I added 'official' official. Just the top rung of the ladder. Get it?

Did anyone see Vettel's interview on Top Gear, a brilliant show by him, very quick witted.

Who said Button was a flash in the pan a few years ago?
