Rock Slide - Hwy 28 in NC
Learned today that a rock slide occurred on Hwy 28 in NC Thursday morning. Rock slide is located at Rainbow Falls area. Hwy 28 closure is about 13 miles from TN state line & one mile east of Cable Cove Road on south side of Lake Fontana. Drivers are being detoured by taking Hwy 143 and then Hwy 129.
Report says Hwy 28 is blocked at the location 1 mile east of Cable Cove Road. NC DOT is not allowing traffic West on Hwy 28 past that point. Rockslide is near Rainbow Falls area. So where is that in relation to Fontana Lodge? Or is the report saying the rockslide is at that location?

My guess is the rockslide is between Fontana Village Resort & Fontana Dam Road. Looks like it occurred right before you get to Fontana Dam Road coming east from Fontana Village Resort. Maybe I've got my direction messed up. Seems like it ought to be the other way.

Saw news coverage update on rock slide along HWY 28 near Fontana Dam. Latest report indicated that it would be near the end of FEB/2018 before NC Hwy Dept cleared the debris & stabilized the mountainside.
Also saw a news report where a Magnitude 2.7 earthquake occurred near Robbinsville, NC on DEC 26th. Lots of seismic activity in this area recently.
Well, given the weather right now, I have no plans to drive the car - let alone to drive it up there.
One issue with running up there in the winter is encountering roads white with salt, even well into March some times.
But I would be interesting, if I had the time off, to go up and see the work they are doing.
