Default SPARE ?

I previously posted a question regarding a compact tire or doughnut for the Crossfire. I spoke to the dealership and asked if the spare from the SLK would work with the Crossfire. I was informed that the lug pattern is different and therefore not the solution.Dealership said they checked with home office.

Does anyone know if there is an after market product available? i'm concerned with getting a blow out and being stranded.I know towing is available but thats no solution and the repair kit is not going to help.

looking forward to hear from our technicians and informed members as to what they are doing.

If you are really that concerned, buy 1 - 18" wheel and tire and keep it in the trunk as a spare. In an emergency, it will work on either the front or rear.

Keep an eye out on ebay. There are wheels and tires available regularly at semi-reasonable prices.

Of course, your trunk space will go to about zero...

Then again, the only time I had a problem, I blew out a front AND a rear. So this solution would still have left me with the tow truck!!!

I think the slk spare would fit.Brakes and suspension are the same. The new chrysler 300 has self sealing tires as an option.Maybe they will offer something for the xfire in the near future.I believe there continental tires.

I read info about a SLK AMG that had the air comp. and glue. Not sure what year.See if you can find a Slk spare on ebay. Also the SLk wheels are smaller in diameter.Do you get alot of flats?I had one flat tire in 20 years of driving.

Thanks for the reply.Like yourself I live on the east coast and I have visions of hitting a pot hole and blowing a tire and being stranded on the NJ Turnpike .It would be bad enough for me but my wife drives the car much of the time.
Your right flats are rare.Guess getting older makes me a bit more concerned with all the what ifs.If you ever hear of anything ,I certainly would appreciate hearing from you

I checked over on the Benz. forum and the AMG guys are looking for spares also. The SLK AMG has bigger wheels( 17") and they couldn't fit a spare that size in the trunk. The base model SLK's come with a compact spare that you have to inflate. With the crossfire having two different size wheels it would be hard to get a spare in 18" or 19" diameter.Just comes with the territory owning a small sports coupe with huge wheels.

Sparkie, hard to tell from the fuzzy pic. It appears to be a full size diameter but narrow wheel. Personally, When driving long distances, I keep a front wheel assy. in the trunk. It sits flat, top side down and to one side. Of course, not an option for the roadster.

Just wondering about getting one for long distance trips that won't take up all the trunk space. Just in case. Love to know if this will work on the crossfire. I have found others that are from the SLK R170 platform....so will these work?

Live dangerously - no spare.

That's probably safer than having a spare tire lightly held down - saved by an airbag and killed by your own spare tire.

I bought a collapsable spare off a 2002 SLK 320 from a yard in Calif. about 4 yrs. ago & it works the way it should on our Xfires. I've had it on both front & rear axels & there is complete clearance of the calipers & all other objects. My spare was never used & it came from a totaled 320. Got it off e-bay for $100. plus $20. shpg. It's quite a view to see this tire expand with air & retract back to donut size when it's job is done. I measured the size from the ctr of the wheel tread straight across to the ctr of the tread on the opposite side when collapsed & ordered a black spare tire cover off e-bay for a little travel trailer tire & it blends nicely in my gray colored trunk area. To me it's worth knowing it's there. Hope I don't get into too serious of a front end smash-up!!!!!!

Exactly the information I was looking for...THANK YOU !!
Now this raises another question : I am doubtful that this compact spare wheel will clear the calipers of the SRT6...anyone know?

Could you please read the size of the inflatable tire off the side of the spare and post here. Thanks in advance.

I think you have to have shorter wheel bolts as well or the longer threads hit the parking brake assembly, this is to allow for the difference in the thickness of the steel an alloy rims.

Here's two that fit on the NA, SRT is still a question mark.

Good investigative reporting 180. I wonder if steveb8699 has a SRT6 or an NA. That could mean the difference right there.
