Lighting control knob
Ok here's a question for all ...
I understand how to turn on the fog lamps by pulling out the light control ****. But what happens when you pull the **** out a second time? I've searched the manual (I am a believer in RTFM) but to no avail. What I have noticed, after reaching my destination and I turn the lights off, the **** is back in at the first pull-out position. Is this a time delay for "heated lights" ?
Thanks in advance to all replies

I do believe it's for the parking lights. you may notice that you have a euro type of option to be able to illuminate either the left side parking lights, or the right side parking lights.
Just a guess but as a previous M-B owner I'll bet it is for rear fog lights. My old M-B 240D had a place for such lamps even though it didn't come standard on the car. Maybe someone else knows?
I had not tried to pull the lamp switch out to the second detent. I had forgotten that. I parted with my 240D after 18 years of reliable, albeit slow, use many years ago.

I'll look into the rear fogs that midlife mentioned, but still hope to hear soon.
It's just one of those posers in life.

yup, that's the rear fog lamp switch position. i bought an OE German tail lamp housing with the rear fog lamp installed; haven't gotten the right switch for it yet though -
NXMX5: I see that the backup lights appear to now be red - must be the fog lamps? So what happens to the backup lights? Is a one sided deal - fog on the left & backup on the right?
It would seem to me that the existing switch would work but instead the wiring would be the problem.
Also what is your European source? I just bought an official XF first aid kit from a man in the UK. I would be interested in other items.

oh the dealer told you... then it must be true.
hehe
nope; the switch is different (no slot for the rear fog lamp fuse) and the wiring is not there.
midlife; that's right... have a single reverse lamp on the passenger side. the fog lamp is set into the drivers side reverse lamp (for US)... i have been told the fog lamp should be mounted on whichever side of the car is closest to the center divider on the road... eg. UK cars have rear fog lamps on the right side of the car because they drive on the left.

I'm one of those guys that gets a new toy and plays with this and that and the other ... I recall days as a kid ... "Dad, what's this do? How come this goes here?"
With what I've read here so far I am going to check further with some other sources. See if it's possible to add a rear fog light.
Thank you to all that's replied.

Evidently I didn't play around with this switch enough. After further investigation I found that it does pull out to a second detent position. Hmmm... has anyone found the spare tire yet (maybe I missed that one too)?
... I'll have to keep searching for those hidden little surprises.
I can't check mine because the switch has been removed for the roll cage install, but does it turn the lights on when the car is started ? Perhaps it's one of those daytime running light thingies that turns the lights on when the car is started.
Hmmm, I love a good mystery...

As by low, in Europe every car must be equipped with a rear fog lamp. Either on both sides of the car or on that side where the driver is (the end of the car in the corresponding driving direction).
That's why our EU-Crossfires has different tail lamps. One with the back up light (white) and one with the fog light (red).
The light **** has two additional position when light is on (position or low beam). First pull engages the front fog lamps. Second pull activates additionally the rear fog lamp. It's not possible to light the rear fog lamp only.
