We had an odd and quite annoying incident this weekend, went to fill up the Ltd Crossfire and the cable came apart in my hands - the lid then wouldn't close, until I managed to touch the wires together... then the locking mechanism worked.
Have no idea how the wire broke... or why?

 

Which cable? I am not aware of any exposed cabling near the filler.

 

This was a wire inside the plastic link between filler cap and the hinge... it just failed.

 

that's interesting... sounds like a ground loop, so the car knows the cap is on -- also sounds like you'll have to reconnect that wire. was it sheared off by the fuel door, or get caught in something and tear?

 

It does need to be reconnected, not sure how, I spoke with the garage this morning as it clearly is both a safety issue and a challenge.
It appears to have just separated... the fuel cap is after all locked when the car's ignition is turned on. - it took quite an effort to get the car to reset itself.

I think it was metal fatigue that caused the wire to break, brought on by the very cold temperatures here last week, which probably made the plastic coating brittle.

 

i think he means the plastic string that attaches the fuel cap to the car so it does not get lost...

Yes I do but its not plastic it has a cable in the middle, and it is how the system locks the fuel cap.

 

Hmmm...this seems very strange. There is no reference to a ground or other connection in the wiring diagrams and the actual locking actuator is pneumatic not electric anyway. On mine the lock works irrespective of whether the flap is open/closed or if the cap is on or off. There is also no reference to a connection on the flap in the removal instructions. The wire might be there to discharge static to prevent a spark when the cap is replaced. Perhaps the US versions are different to the UK. Have yo got a picture?

 

I'll take a picture for you today... the wire seems to prevent the filler closing, I solved the problem by touching the two bare ends, this enabled me to shut the filler door.

I'll find out more when I take it back to the dealer today...

 

Just back from the Garage, and it appears that the problem was a build up of static... for some reason this prevented the lid from locking...
The linkage got so cold it went brittle... and broke...I thought there was metal inside it was that hard, but it turns out it was just very cold... 10f here one night.

 

Help! Got my car back from the bodyshop today & the fuel cap cable/plastic string is detached from the plastic post. Almost dropped the cap on the ground. I think they busted it at the bodyshop when they took the quarter panel off. Would someone take a look ath theirs & let me know how it's kept on? It looks like something got snapped off the top of the post. And it looks like it's supposed to be one piece, but I'm not sure. Maybe I can glue something on top of it to keep it from coming off easily... Any ideas?

I find it hard to believe that static had anything to do with the problem. Static means sparks and sparks on gas caps mean a big bang. KAPOW
