Default Checking Trans Temp?

What would be a good way to check transmission fluid temperature? Manual says use a scan tool but doesn't say what kind or go into any more detail. I have an Infrared scanner, do you think shooting the trans pan with it would give me an accurate reading of the fluid temp? I got the dipstick. Thanks!

I know this is really old but I'm in the exact same position. I already bought the dipstick and cap but dont have a temp scan tool, but I do have an infrared scanner. Did you end up using it? Thanks in advance

I use an infra-red scanner. Works fine for this.
