Steve keep your padded hoops, eventually you'll realize that your chome ones make your AMG look like a Mazda Miata...

Yes the extra washers (shims) would have to go inside at the top mounts to set the position of the bars further back, there for setting them more verticle, and I believe this could result with the very top of the bars being between may be a quarter, or a half an inch further back. They would be not perfectly verticle but certainly more verticle than mine. It will be a fiddle getting it assembled with loose washer used as shims, and if attempting this, I would glue the washers (shims) together and glue to the captive nut on the bars before carefully slotting them into place. And they will need to be in place and bolted up (not tight) while the plastic beam is being marked up with a felt pen for drilling. I used a 2.5 inch hole saw, but before drilling you have to make sure the resulting holes will be completely hidden by the flat polished plate and covered up by rubber when finished. I need to glue the rubber rings down in place next. When re assembling take extra care with plastic trims at each end of beam - these are quite delicate and care is needed making sure all tabbs are in position before tapping them down. Have fun!

thanks...great idea in the glue. I have a press at work. Maybe I could heat the lower bars a bit, then put a slight bend into them without hurting the chrome...will will see...if that is too much,, I will use the washers...

Doc, you will not be able to bend these with out damage I reckon, and the bars are not chromed, they are polished stainless. I'm just looking for some rubber trim to go round the edges of the flat stainless plates that sit on top of the plastic bulkhead. Good luck!

Without measuring the hole centre positions its hard to say - so I think you'll have to take the risk as I did. Of course you can try them in place to check before drilling!

I think they will work after seeing yours. They are 21/2" bars, all chrome, have a huge chrome plate to cover holes I will cut... You got me in the mood to finish this project..lol...should look good, and these are straight up as well...

Is there a write up someplace on how to take apart the coverings of the bulkhead in order to access the mounting for the roll hoops? When I got my black wheels put on the car I changed all the exterior silver trim to matte black too and love the look, but the roll hoops need to come out to repaint them.

I see the MB instructions do not mention process of finding hole centrers to drill. Feel free to fire any installation queries to me

Great that you have the instructions in a PDF. I had just made a few extra copies of his Template and was offering them up to anyone in need. Now it seems that anyone that wants to shim the bars w/ washers to get them more vertical will have to slightly adjust from this Template(fore and aft center line only), depending how far back they can actually be shimmed. When I do this install this Winter, I'll want to shim them as far back to vertical as possible, so I'll adjust the Template then. And an F.Y.I., I recently purchased the AutoGrimmig(stainless steel) bars for a "make offer" price of $144.50 on E-Bay. Happy Holidays.

Steve, on our roadsters, we have to enlarge the diameter of the holes for the larger diameter bar... I think, since I haven't done it yet... Now when I install the stock roadster bars into the coupe, I have to make holes for them. I have an old template passed on to me from a few years back. Just need to get going on this...the Dragon run will be here before you know it...lol
