I think my dealership is screwing me over bad. Iit says they put 5-40W on the receipt - when I called them on it they said "well we have a new computer system and we just don't have the 0-40W listed in the comptuer yet." Uh huh.

When I went to look at my oil, it's just as dark as it was before I changed it. I asked about that. "Yes ma'am, Mobil 1 just changed their formula, and now instead of being clear, it's a dark amber."

REALLY?? Who else is buying this? Or have I missed something. I know I'm just a girl, but dammit, I'm not stupid.

Oh, and they couldn't reset my FSS, they had to connect it up to the computer to reset it. And in doing so they reset my clock to some bizarre time.

I'm so DONE with this dealership, I swear. So did Mobile 1 change the 0-40W oil formula?

 

I actually thougth Mobil1 stopped production of the 0W40 oil. I know Mercedes Benz cars are now using 5W30 instead of 0W40. Maybe someone who works at MB *ahem*ImportLabSRT*ahem* can chime in on this...

 

How dark was your oil before you changed it?

Mobil 1 is definitely dark amber in color. My Crossfire oil does not darken much between oil changes. It's definitely not going to come out of the bottle clear.

I don't know of any recent formula changes, but Mobil has changed the forumula over time.

The dealer should be resetting your FSS using the instructions found in the owner's manual. I would expect any Chrysler dealership to get this right. I could tolerate a non-dealer affiliated shop not knowing how to do it, but I would be disappointed in a dealership that doesn't do it. Anyway, it's easy to do yourself.

What bizarre time? Bizarre as in incorrect, or bizarre as in 25:15?

I think some of the confusion over "change" in formula is the result of whatever the shop is selling at the moment. Chances are maybe the dealer is changing from 5W-40 to 0W-40. Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40 should be fine for your engine as well.

 

Mobil one 0 40 still at walmart 6.29 qt. Many dealers have changed from m1 to Quaker state ,so if it matters to u ask before, u buy and then u may get m1!!!!!

 

Rob - My oil probably had about 3500 on it when I last changed it and it was a good deal darker than the new Mobil 1 I put in ? I do mine myself so I am aware of how dirty it is coming out.
That said what is the ESP Formula?
texas t I have searched high and low at Walmart for 0 40 and none around here have it. I think I paid 6.59 at Autozone a few months ago when I changed mine.

Sounds like you got screwed.

If the dealership is sophisticated enough to know about Mobil 1 color variations, they should be equally knowledgeable on resetting your FSS.

If it were mine and I planned on keeping it for a long time, I'd go to an independant and get it done correctly - fleece filter and 8 1/2 quarts of M1 0W-40.

You can check Mobil 1's website for the official word on the color darkening, but I think you're being lied to by the dealer.

 

This came from an MB tech. Not 100% certain it's correct but every oil listed does have the 229.5 rating.

229.5 engine oils must be used with fleece oil filter designed for use with 229.5 engine oils.

I would have been more correct to say noticeably darker, but not anything close to black. I only drive it 3-4K miles a year, so oil changes take place no more than once a year.

The ESP 5W-40 formula is relatively new and meets the specifications of manufacturers such as MB. It is supposed to be better for emissions systems and is especially applicable to diesel engines though it is also recommended for gasoline engines. Whenever you hear of someone using 5w-40 instead of 0W-40 in their Crossfire it is probably the product they are refering to.

Locally, it seems that 0W-40 is more readily available. I buy 0W-40 when on sale at Advance. Right now it's 5 qts for $30 including a premium Mobil 1 filter. Since they don't stock a Mobil 1 filter for the Crossfire I just get 10 qts oils plus filters for my wife's vehicle and the boat.

One thing I'm curious about - the use of fleece filters. All the manufacturers of fleece filters for the Crossfire also sell paper filters. The main reason for fleece is for extended drain intervals. However, 7500 miles is not an extended drain interval so a paper filter would not be expected to degrade in an oil change interval. (I confess to using a paper filter on my last oil change). Since the fleece ones can be purchased online for $14 or so I just might splurge next time. A local dealer just quoted me $34!

One other oil change-related note. Local dealers do not seem to stock the copper drain plug washer. Chances are they are reusing the old washers instead of replacing at each oil change. Almost guaranteed to drip oil! Non DIY Crossfire owners will not notice the accumulation of oil inside the plastic oil pan cover .

 

I got the washer at napa. They cross to their p/n 704-1355 gasket .99cents. Also got napa gold filter p/n 7078 16.22$ has made in Germany on it and is fleece and also comes with 5 rubber o-rings. I have not used any of this yet and got most of the info from this forum

 

The oil has always been darker coming out of my engine then it was going in. I have changed it at 3K, 5K and even 9K. Still getting the 0W40 at Walmart for 6.49. There was a previous post which had the entire document for oil specifications. Got to be careful on some of those oils listed as they are also made for different countries, Wierd I know.

Well once again, my car just went bannanas telling me my oil pressure is too high. They put too much oil in AGAIN and scoffed at me when I suggested it. I've had it with this place, but I'm stuck. There's no other dealership in town that can work on my car. Will Mercedes dealers work on our car at all?

And I'm still not convinced that they even changed my oil at all. This stuff is DARK.

 

Your local MB dealer may work on it, but it depends on the service mgr.

Not sure what Texas town you live in, but a good import car service center should be able to do it the right way. Consider buying your own oil/filter and just having them do the labor.

Out of curiosity, who's the dealer?

 

Hate to say it.....but you've been had.

I would think that there are many independent MB garages/mechanics around that will do right by you. As others have suggested, buy your own oil/filter, watch them put it in and then you know it's right.

 

there's always the K&N oil filter, I kow it's cheaper than what the dealer wants for the correct filter and from what I can tell it appears to be the exact same filter

 

I was told 0-40 was just reformulated. It's available again.

oh and Mobil 1 is crap oil, I bought several jugs from various auto supplyer and they all had some funky brown sludge in the bottom of the container, I switched to Castrol syntec 5w-30

 

I'm afraid I just took my car back and ripped the service manager a new one. I feel bad, but seriously, how many times do I have to come back to the dealership for a simple oil change? And will they ever get it right the first time?

I did a little contamination test on the oil on a clean white napkin. After 10 minutes, this is what it looked like. That no lookey like new oil to you? Me neither.

And apparently not to the service manager either, cause he completely did a new oil and filter change while I was standing there - himself. And he reset the counter, didn't screw up my clock (he knew which was the correct reset button) AND drove it around to make sure it felt right.

Okay NOW I'm happy...-ier.
