Default PICS - TomTom Go (SatNav) now installed!

Not sure if these are selling in the US yet, but are proving to be quite popular in the UK. Around about USD$800 (’440) complete. much cheaper and more interesting than the standard type.

Looks good. I already had my IPAQ so adding the sat nav to that was easier/cheaper than buying the TomTom Go. I have TomTom3 software on it which I believe is roughly the same. Works great for me.

The price is not bad, but I don't think I'd like the screen up there....:-)
Looks like from the drivers position it would cover a good portion of the field of vision in that direction.
Second is that some suction cup holding it onto the windshield or is it permanently attached ??
Lastly do you have a link where one could look at the options ??
For now I will stick with either using my PDA like Saldous or enjoing the detours ;-)

It's on the WRONG side of the car!!! I suspect if I tried to get from the UK, the maps would be backwards on the left side of the car.

Saldous, unfortunately my iPaq 1910 didn't have bluetooth or a serial connection so it was a TTG or a whole new PDA combo. Given that I never use the iPaq anyway, I figured that this unit would represent a better choice. Most of my friends have wired/bluetooth TT3 solutions which are all excellent. I believe that the TTG is actually closest to the Palm version of TT.

Sunny,

The suction cap arm thing is totally movable, there's a clamp release on the base. It's also supplied with a stick on base for the dash, which you then use with the suction cap. I have heard that you cannot remove the stick on base once it has been applied. Didn't want to learn that the hard way. I chose to place it somewhere where it doesn't interfere. As I am fairly tall it's not really in the way of anything. I think that http://www.tomtom.com is the best place to check the unit and options. I hear it's heading to the US in September.

I gave your set up a great deal of consideration but I did not like the lay out on the dash.

I went with traffic master. I understand that this set up is not for everyone but ideal for me.

What I like.

1) can get a route on the move, I just call the control centre, tell them where I want to go and they down load the route to my car.

2) post code entry. If I know the post code it will program the route and away I go.

3) If there is a traffic jam on my pre program destnation it will auto program a different route. Ideal for avoiding pile ups.

4) speed camera alert. for all fixed cameras it will give me two warning that one is approaching. This already saved me one ticket and 3 points.

5) incomming calls. I can receive incomming calls.

The only I dont like is the yearly subscription. but it cost about ’500 for the install and about ’100.00 per year. Most other nav systems require a software update once a year for changes to the road and this averages 50-100 so it could be argued that it cost about the same.

SEE MY ALBUM FOR THE LAY OUT. OUTSIDE FRAM MATCHES TWO TONE LEATHER PERFECT. TO ME IT LOOKS LIKE IT COULD BE FACTORY.

Hi Scott,

thanks for the link I like the 3D looks of the maps...that could be worth the trouble.
I guess I had the sight lines wrong, I figured it would block the front corner of the car from view, which I use as aiming point when I am shooting for the perfect line through my mountain passes. ;-)

But then again with the suction cup I could and probably should pop the GPS off the screen before a spirited run anyways

I'll look at the unit once it's available around here.

sadly i'm back to the PDA and tom tom 3 software now that the tom tom go unit has had to go back (they wouldn't let me keep it) but it is a good bit of kit and only ’426 in the UK which is much cheaper that the DCUK poor quality unit. Looks good in the xfire too.

Excellent news - TomTom have announced that the next version of the OS for this unit (which supports customised POIs - SPEED CAMERAS!) is to be released on the web next Thursday 12th August.

Yay!

The TTG is closed architecture, and I am not sure that anyone has written any 3rd party apps for it.

TomTom are releasing a new O/S update for the device, which allows custom POI and import functionality.

Sweet!

For those using TomTom I recommend you also install:

http://www.digitools.co.uk/home.php - UK Postcode searcher. Simply insert the post code and click on navigate to or show on map. Works great

and

http://checkpoint.oabsoftware.nl/ind...y-download.htm - Installs POI details on speed cameras and lots more.
