Question for Saskins on intake
Saskins,
Two questions:
1. What do you think about adding heat shields to the intakes like greenfilters did with there twister intake? Would that help or take away the 'ram' air effect.
2. Is the biggest HP gain, in your opinion, from the filters or from changing the MAF Y Splitter?
I would like to keep the 'crossfire engine cover' if possible.
Thanks.
Doug

Sorry Doug for not responding sooner,
The HP gains isn't necessarilly from the Air filter and or its heat shield. It the volume of air, and air temp. The colder the air air is, the more dense it is. Which means a much better Fuel to air ratio, so better Gas milage, HP, & Torque. As far as adding heat shields, I've done it. I know you need it. There is no way you shouldn't have something to protect those filters from the intense heat. So no it doesn't take anything away from the intake. The air flow throught that engine bay sucks. I have been working on added 4.5" port holes at the bottom of the car to allow more of a traditonal ram air system. The only problem is you have to modify your car. I don't have a problem at all with doing custom fabrication on my cars. However, I'm assuming most of you do. So unless you are willing to do a little cutting, my air feed design wouldn't be for you.
To answer the Question about the MAF, or filter. I would say its the combination of both things. The new filters breath about 50% better then stock, and with the less turbulant cooler air flow the MAF is going to get a much better reading. I hope that I answered your questions, if not ask away. I am always willing to take the time and answer any question, no matter how silly you may think it is. Remember there is no such thing as a stupid question. Pnly stupid people who blow up there car, because they didn't ask enough questions.

I say screw the airbox. The bigger the airbox the lesser the chance of that hot air out of that engine bay. Also the airbox design is ****. I mean it looks cool when you lift the hood up, but as far as efficiency goes it's pointless. I did a vacuum test with it to see how much suction I could get, by plugging up the 3.25" out let hole, and attaching the vacuum hose to one of the inlet tubes. I laid out pieces of debris that were all different sizes and weights. I wanted to see how well the airflow would travel through he box with no filters in it. The debris varied from dust, sand, to little weights from my tackle box. I moved the vacuum hose to each opening, to see the differences if any between the different openings. Funny enough I got the best results out of the right inlet tube. For what ever reason, it would get a better air flow(or sucking power) and pick up more of the heavier objects from that side. As I suspected from the start, the only way it would pick anything up is by having the vacuum in the outlet port. I tryed from inlet to inlet, and plugging the outlet. It picked up the dust, but hardly any sand, and there was no chance for those lead weights moving.
Then I tried it out the same test with my system, thinking it would probably be similar results, as far as to having the vacuum needing to be as close to which ever tube you want to have draw in air from. However it was actually different then what my theory was. It turned out that it didn't matter which port I was testing from. It picked everything up, in every configuration. I was totally surprised. Oh ya I wouldn't recommend doing this test, Man was it a pain in the ***. I think I got a sinus infection because of it.

Yes, The car has been on a Dyno. A real Dyno, not the bar spin Dyno's that every Lube & Tune has. A good friend of mine called in a favor from some of the guys at Saleen. The dyno that was put on my car is the most accurate dyno avail. They pulled both rear tires and hook it up to the axils. So it gets the best picture drawn of your cars actual Horse Power to the Rear wheels. It was amazing. I wish that I had more time with them, because the have the capabilities to digitally map your car to be able to do its absolute best, that it is capable of. Sean, the guy who was running the Dyno, said he would have loved to be able to go through it all, but they actually pushed another one of there cars aside for me to be able to jump in there to run some numbers. I didn't know how involved it was, they had like four guys working on my car. They ran my engine through its paces via computer. Which actually became an issue, because I kind of hurt my MAF a little of the period of months doing the R&D on the intakes, that it was malfunctioning. So were clear though, it won't hurt your MAF it was all the physicality of pulling it in and out about a thousand time, and dropping it, etc.... Sh*t that happens when you work with something for a real long period time.
So any way they worked around it , and tricked my ECU, and got back to normal, and ran it. Man it was really cool.
I have the print out of the basic break down of stats, however I just a couple of weeks ago moved ,and have had a ***** of a time trying to find all my paper work. It may be in storage, don't ask me why...but I go over there later on tonight, or tomorrow if I am unable to locate it in one of the millions of boxes I have.

Oh ya so if anyone knows were I can get a new MAF sensor for cheap, I would love to know. It not that mine doesn't work, its just malfunctioning...ooooppppsss. What an *******.
Thanks Saskins. I am super busy at work (work for an accounting firm) and have a wedding coming up. But when things settle down I am going to run with something on these intakes.
Congratulations on the up coming wedding. When is the big day? I just got married last June.....Don't dooo it! No really......Don't do it. I'm kidding, I hope for the best for you two.
Big day is July 30. At least we are both a little older than most people who get married 29/30 but it is still a big thing.
Is it true the first year is the hardest?

You bet your *** my man. The thing is it really depends on the situation, and were both people are coming from. If your both on the same page, or have similar backgrounds (up bringing) then It could be relatively easy. However the challenges we face with each other all stems from were we come from, and weather or not we deal with significant trauma's that happened to us at some point in our lives. My wife for example, and I say this because its not a bad thing. She and I came from two totally different worlds. Both my parents were very big on communication, they were strict in the sense of if they said " your grounded", they would follow through on the claims. Now on the other hand My wife's parents were the 180 degree opposites. Her mother is Bi-polar, has no communication skills, and has a control complex. Here father pretty much abandoned her, he was an abusive alcoholic, who pretty much cares only about himself. Side Note....Dude I'm going to kick the **** out of him some day.. Any who, Now if you look at the dynamic, it is pretty obvious that there is bound to be a conflict of communication. Now here's another tricky thing you may or may not know. My wife is extremely good at manipulation. She's totally unaware that it is even happening. She's been going through some intense therapy for the last 3 months, to try to finally resolve the pains that have, & still continue to happened to her by her Parents. Her manipulation comes from her survival instincts, caused by her extremely angry Bi-polar mother, who the only skills she gave her, was that of having to rely on her (my mother-in-law) for everything. My poor wife still can't make a decision about what to have for dinner. I have to tell her what she wants. Its been a painful experience. I don't think I ever would have stayed, unless I had the two parents that I do have. There is an up swing to things. She's doing great, and starting to see that there is a better life out there for her.
I say all this to now, because if I can give anybody something of worth, it would be that maybe because of my experience, it could give you a different outlook on your future partner. The only this relationship has worked, is because I could see the struggle before it got here. My compassion and my being able to understand why she does, the things she does is what saved us. My only advice is be open-minded, always communicate, & only fight the right fights. Everything else either meaningless, or it fixes its self. Good luck man, and enjoy it.

wow, wish you the best of luck. sounds like she is on the right path at least. i copy kicking the sh@# out of her dad. my fiancee was raised by a single mother (very complicated) but other than that we share the same life values. luckily i have a psychology degree so that seems to help at knowing the right words and encouraging converstations.
we just moved in together a few months ago and we are finding these months to be the most trying. but from what i hear, most people are the same way.
thanks and keep up the good work on the intake. we need more people like you around here.

You have a psychology degree, that's great man. I majored in Psychology, I figured hell I've been in therapy for 6 years, guaranteed straight A's. Well that didn't happen but I enjoyed it. Oh 6 years sounds like I'm a nut case. I started going after my mom had passed away when I was nine years old." So that's all I have to say about that."- Forrest Gump anyone.
Hey Saskins,
It seems that no matter how many times someone asks you, you are unable to produce actual dyno numbers for your air intake. I thought you were finally going to give us the info, and after reading your story....still no numbers!

Ya, sorry about that. I f you look back at my story...I mentioned that I have recently moved and have not been able to find my stats files for the car. I am still looking, and as soon as I can find it I'll post it. I thought it was in my car. Checked...... not so much.

That would be the only valid number comparison. From the sounds of your post, you didn't seem to have much time to systematically get those numbers. Your comments would be appreciated.
