Transmission Grinding
Hello all. My 2005 SRT6 started driving with a loud grinding sound when I am at low speeds and goes away as I go faster. Its very loud, and when its up on stands I can see that the tires stop spinning when the grinding starts. It sounds like its coming from the tranny, but its hard to tell. This happens once a long time ago but it stopped once I took the rear driver side tire off the car and put it back on. This time, no luck. Any insights would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to check the fluid levels right now as well.
Ok, so a bit more info.It only happens in first gear. Its very rhythmic as seen here. The drive train still turns up to the differential, but after that the wheels lurch like you see in the video. I've disconnected the battery for things to reset and it had no effect. I should note that this started right after the first heavy rain we have had in the area for about a year or so. It may be coincidence. I thought maybe it had to do with me using the winter/wet mode and switching back to standard. I feel like its relevant because to my understanding, winter/wet mode omits first gear, which is the gear that seems to be having issues. I am at 101,000 miles approximately. Fluid was changed not too long ago, just before I bought it at 78k miles I believe.
Hey James1549,
Prove out the brakes and calipers first before digging too deep. Sounds are weird on vehicles, they can travel and be very deceiving. Also the drive shaft and universals can make those sounds.
Just my two cents from an old fart.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I put the tires back on and dropped it off the stands to take it to a friends garage and... it stopped. No idea why. Drove around and she works fine now. Super strange. If it happens again I'll update, but this is the second time its happened like this and jacking it up and dropping it down also make it stop the first time. Today was much louder than the first time though. It must be something very specific that I do that triggers the problem in my exact car, because as far as I can find out no one has seen this exact problem in the way it occurs for me.
Who knows. Our suspension is pretty stiff, could just be that it gets bumped into a bad spot and just needs to be knocked back into place. That's the best I've got for now.
Wish I had a clear answer for this but I won't complain with the result I got.
Thanks all.
