Angry Warranty different for second owners!?!?!?

So I'm a little discomforted by a discussion I had with a local dealer today.

I just purchased my X about 3 weeks ago; I knew the warranty was going to be short lived when I purchased it. So I drove it around for a bit making note of all the problems I would think should be covered under warranty. Some things I thought might have been caused by wear and tear but from reading some of the threads on here they appeared to be a more wide spread issue.

I compiled a detailed list of items I would like repaired and dropped it off at the dealer (not my preference just how my cards are delt). I received a call today, they were very helpful and understanding regarding some of my disappointment… but I was informed that Chrysler is more selective when providing warranty services to a second owner, due to a “lack of history.” I explained that I could see how some of the wear and tear type cosmetic things could be, but for some I just didn’t see how they would fall in to that category.

They mentioned that for anything cosmetic related they have to send Chrysler a picture for approval, unless they can find a valid TSB. Some of the cosmetic things I am having issues with are as follows:

- The dreaded paint chipping issue I have seen people complaining about this… The paint on the center console near the e-Brake is chipping. If anyone has a TSB for this it would be greatly appreciated!!! I couldn’t seem to find it.

- The silver trim on the inner door handle is bubbling!!! I couldn’t find anyone else with this problem but... I can’t figure out how someone could “abuse” a door handle to make it bubble. Seems like it is clearly a manufacture’s defect!

- The headliner hangs slightly below the seal in the rear hatch… it seems like a clip or something came loose? Anyone else have this problem? Not really noticeable so its not on my “hot plate.”

These were all items the dealer felt confident that Chrysler would NOT approve warranty repair for!!

Some of the other things I’m having problems with…

- Difficulty shifting to First, Second, and Reverse (Manual)… Referenced TSB. Of course they couldn’t duplicate the issue. Not super concerned at the moment since this will be covered under the powertrain warranty (I figure I’m going to have to pick my battles on this one).

- Rattling from the rear hatch… I already adjusted the bumpers and this helped tremendously, but there is still a slight rattle. I read in one of the TSBs that this is also caused by the metal on metal latch pieces, and that a replacement part has been issued to replace it with some plastic parts to eliminate the rattling. Of course they couldn’t reproduce the problem.

- Rattling/Vibrations from the AC unit when turned on to certain settings… They are looking into this further, but not to my surprise, they couldn’t reproduce the issue.

- The driver’s door handle feels looser than the passenger door when the inner handle is pulled. Also there is a “popping” sound when driving. I have seen a TSB on this and referenced it to the dealer. It’s almost laughable at this point (yet I’m crying) they couldn’t reproduce the issue.

- Map light not illuminating – ordering replacement parts.

- Cup holder broken – Referenced TSB - ordering replacement parts.

- Headlight condensation – Referenced TSB - No comment from dealer, still working on the car…

- The red led for the gas indicator doesn’t illuminate when the lights are turned on - No comment from dealer, still working on the car…

- The driver seat heater doesn’t work – ordering replacement parts.

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions or TSBs I can reference. Unfortunately, I’m out of town and won’t be able to get to the car until the end of the week – and the warranty goes out at the end of the month (next week). The best I can hope for is they find the noises I’m complaining about or I can sit with the Tech on Sat and go through them and hope the noises “come to life.”

Sorry for the novel… Thanks in advance for everyone’s help!

If your referring to the red line on the fuel gauge when its almost empty this does not light up. Its just a red line on the gauge.

The gas pump symbol doesn't light up either.

Don't forget you have to transfer the 7/70 powertrain warranty within 30 days if you haven't done so already.

Whoa. Did you run a CARFAX on your car before you bought it? Sounds like it has had a rough life so far.

Does anyone know if all TSBs are done when a car is Certified?

Thank you all for the responses so far...

Iamfink - Correct... I'm referring to the "red line" that should illuminate when the head lights are turned on.

C_Plunkett - I paid for this last week... do you know how long the transfer takes? As of today the dealer that has my car (not the same as the place I transferred the pt warranty from) said the transfer had not gone through yet.

RPM - Carfax and Experian - nothing of concern showed up in the report. Where it may sound like the car has "lived a hard life", the car runs and looks great... Most of these items are common issues many early production crossfire's were subject to (according to posts on this forum). But I appreciate your concern...

Crossfire LTD - Thanks for the consolidation... I have seen this list... I thought I had read someone having a TSB for the flaking interior paint, but I cant seem to find it... Do you know if any of these relate to that?

FP - My guess would be the dealer/tech would only perform the TSB if they deemed the issue serious enough...

No only recalls are done during the certification process. TSB's are notifications for service techs of 'common' complaints, and the factory authorized fix for the complaint. Not all cars will have the problem outlined in any particular TSB.

I don't mean to be rude, but if you bought the car used you bought it as-is. I don't think chrysler is going to replace anything cosmetic. If you didn't buy the car from the dealer your going to they are definitely not going to bend over backwards to help. Sorry just my .02

Also is there a TSB for the '05 rear end whine?

Being the second owner did the dealership supply you with a loaner car?

When I bought my '04 XF about 3 weeks ago, I purchased from my Chrysler dealer a Chrysler 5 year or 50K mile (from the date of my purchase) extended, bumper to bumper warranty. It covers the powertrain and 5,007 parts (everything but wear items, brakes, rotors, etc. - a very short list of what's not covered. I have similar coverage on my Sebring Convertible and Pacifica. They always give me a free loaner car if the repairs take more than one day. If it's for a day, I give Enterprise their $35 for the rental (has only happened once). They are supposed to charge me a $100 deductible for each visit but that has never happened in the past 2 years! Don't tell anybody. Before anyone asks, the dealerships have a lot (LOT) of latitude on what they charge for the warranties. Basically, I told them what I would pay for the car, tax, title, tags, and extended warranty and let them figure it out. I don't really car how they write up the sales invoice as long as the bottom line number is my number. Roughly I would count on spending between $1,600 and $2,500. I couple of repairs in 5/50 takes care of that number. Best part is, I don't care what is broken, just fix it. With a check engine light on they can tell you it was caused by anything; it could cost $100 or $1,000. I don't care, it had just better not be on when I pick up my car. In 2 years, my total costs for the other 2 cars has been one rental ($35) and $5 for a fuse. End of my story.

i am the second owner of my xfire and my 5 star dealership has treated me great i have no complaints so far and they have addressed every warranty issue
i have had. and i never had to pay for a rental car, they always paid for them. as far as parts, that's a different story, they always had to order the parts in.
i can see that they wouldn't want the cost of overhead, stocking a bunch of parts for a limited production car.

1: trans shift = first tried to rebuild then replaced the trans.
2: replaced the head lights due to fogging.
3: heated seat repairers 2 times.
4: replaced the drive line due to vibration.
5: replaced the stereo due to i couldn't see the display in the sun.
6: replaced the turn signal/high beam switch it failed.
7: replaced the driver door window regulator it was making a clunk when it fully went down.
8: repaired the blend door motor the fresh air door wouldn't open and the windshield would fog up really bad on the cold days.
9: preformed the tsb on the rear hatch for the hatch lock hose.
10: replaced the head liner due to it falling down at the back by the rear hatch.
11: eng cooling fan recall.
12: rebuilt drivers seat slide assembly, Fwd and back motor bushing failed.
13: next, sending it in for the 3 time for the heated seats.

and after all this i still love the car, call me silly.

You may want to check...most DC service contracts cover the car from the in service date, not the sale date to the second owner. Unless your car was beyond the 4/48 threshold, in which case they would have sold you a used car warranty, which is pretty costly. It sounds like you bought the max care warranty, same as i bought for my '04 which i purchased 3 weeks ago. If you got the same warranty i did, then yours should run 5/50 from the cars original in service date.
If you want me to check for sure, PM me the last 8 numbers from your VIN# ...ie 4X******** and i can check that out for you.

Just received all of the paperwork from Chrysler yesterday. Believe me, when I bought the car I asked the question over and over again about "in service date" or my "date of purchase." I did go with the Maximum Coverage and the paperwork and wallet card all confirm it: expiration date 2/24/12 and expiration mileage is 90K. It was the Used Car Warranty (because the car's original in service date 37 months ago) and maybe it was "costly" but in the end they met the price I told them I would pay for the car "driven off the lot." I think they discounted the car to make up for the warranty cost. Thanks for the offer to check for me.

13dog - Buying a car used doesn't necessarily mean it's "as-is." If the car is still under factory warranty it should be serviced under the same terms. As an update the dealer has agreed to fix these cosmetic issues. Something to keep in mind if you ever decide to purchase a used car.

As a side note - my requests were not out of the ordinary, things that were clearly a result of wear and tear were not requested to be fixed. All of the requests were for things that appeared to be as a result of a defect.

~ as long as the car falls under the 3/36 ... i believe you are entitled to the supplied loaner car program via chrysler.

Took my xfire in today to get some TSB work done. I have an extended warranty (maximum) and the service advisor at the Chrysler dealership in Jacksonville, FL (the one off 9A) mentioned that the following...

23-023-03 WIND-LIKE SOUND MIRROR FLAG AREA ABOVE 50 MPH 2003-10-17
23-014-04 WIND SOUND WHILE DRIVING 2004-05-04
23-047-04 WIND SOUND MIRROR FLAG AREA ABOVE 50 MPH REVISED 2004-11-11

...are not covered even by the max warranty. This means neither the service or the parts! So disappointed.

On the brighter side, I am getting that annoying latch replaced and my steering column re-torqued...
