Well, one thing that the author failed to mention is that you have to be EXTREEMLY careful when opening the case. If you are not careful the red lens portion of the case will snap the transmitter LED off the PC board of the remote. Once you do that, you may as well light it on fire for all of the use it will be. I know this from experience.

well if you snap off the LED it's still salvagable, you can easily de-solder it and re-solder another LED back on. or use the LED that comes with the key fob you bought off ebay.

The funny thing is, that all the used KR55 keys on ebay have gone up in price to about $75-$80, so it's really not worth rebuilding a key, when you can buy a new one from the dealer for $120

Ummm, the LED on our remotes serves as a battery check indicator only. The remote uses RF to lock/unlock the car. The single button model of the remote was IR, that was used on earlier MB models.

It's pretty easy to tell the difference since you can keep the RF remote in your pocket and still use it. The IR remote has to be pointed at the little receiver window next to the lock for it to work.

Well, that LED must be part of the transmission circuit, since my fob won't work without it now. I've never seen it light up (on my good fob), so I find it hard to beleive that it's just there to check the battery.

Question Re: How to Rebuild your Key fob!

I have to ask...how bright is your LED when you press a button? I have to place the red window up to my eye in the dark to see it (a brief flash). However, the car will unlock from 20' away.

After dropping my fob several times, the red lens broke out. So, instead of buying a new fob at stealership prices, I modded mine to tell it apart from my wifes second fob. Still works after over a year...
