Guys I am trying to get to my ashtray. I have slid our my JVC aftermarket radio but I can't seem to get the large dash bezel surrounfing it to come off. I don't want to force and break it. Does anyone know how I can remove the radio and A/C contreol Dash panel off?
Re: How to replace that pesky broken ashtray/coin holder
There are two screens in the upper corners of the radio slot.
Re: How to replace that pesky broken ashtray/coin holder
Got it, good deal, I missed those the first time. My aftermarket radio install harness didn't give me much space to pull out completely and I didn't want to cut any wires so I had a terrible time trying to take out the ash tray to survey the problem and find a solution for it staying open. I ended up removing the mechanism lid on top of the ashtray and releasing the spring strap from its forward facing connection. Problem solved. My ashtray now closes. It doesn't do the nifty push and auto open like it did but since I don't smoke I seldom use it to maybe put keys or flash drives for music so I'm okay with it.
Thanks guys!
Thanks guys!
Re: How to replace that pesky broken ashtray/coin holder
Hey everyone, I'm trying to fix my ashtray that won't stay closed. And every other thread directs me here, and the info is great. But, as far as I know the Photobucket images have been deleted, Anyone know if they can be found anywhere else?
Re: How to replace that pesky broken ashtray/coin holder
Funny, my ashtray is the opposite. It wont open, it doesnt slide open when pushed on, I have to pry it out some and pull it out. Either way, it mainly stays shut just another reminider of the poor built items inside this car, that and the cup holder.
Re: How to replace that pesky broken ashtray/coin holder
To get the ashtray to stay in...(I'm not proud of this fix but it works) I put a piece of black spongy rubber on top of the tray and pushed it in. The rubber holds it in place and you can still pull the tray out if you need to. Also, the rubber is not visible when the tray is closed and when you pull the tray out, the rubber falls into the ashtray ready to use again. I am hoping for a fix to make it work like new again without taking the dash apart.

This is fairly easy all you need is a crosstip screwdriver, radio removal tools...you can get these from walmart for 4.50$ and a upholstry removal tool OR a knife if you are careful! otherwise you will scratch the console. I am attaching a link to a photobucket picture because I cant get the picture to load on here ...shocker.....anyway if you look at the picture its fairly straight forward ...the key is paitence and be gentle prying. First pry up #1 in the pic....its the shifter surrounding....next pry up the shroud thingy inside the first shroud(#2 in the pic)....look at the pic you will know what I mean. Then pry up (#3) the biggest shroud around the shifter. These should come up easy just dont pry hard and work your way around the shifter and it will come up. Next insert the radio removal keys into the radio (you can see them in the pic) and if correctly inserted the radio will slide right out. And finally unscrew the 4 screws that hold the ashtray in, you will have to undo a few wires once you get it out. Its a tight fit ( I mean the ashtray in that small hole. You will need to push it towards the driver side then angle that pass, side towards the rear off the car and rotate it out...........then just reverse these steps putting it back in.......I used a manual and it said I had to remove all kinds of other junk ...as you can see in the picture....you dont need to do that and its a complete waste of time if you do. Anyway I hope this helps, its my first how to type of post and Its prolly really crummy of a post but eh oh well :P PM me if you have any questions. Thanks

You mean this picture?
Just copy the link at the bottom of the four listed (starts with [IMG}http... ) on the left of your photo bucket page and paste into this thread.
Good picture and a good write up, making yourself useful is good for all on this forum.
Great.
Edit your thread, add the picture and change the words and I will erase this picture.
