Default How to change shocks?

New to forum, but not new to owning my crossfire. I'm trying to find a "How To" on changing the shocks since every auto shop wants an arm and a leg just to do it. I know it's not that hard, I just want to see somebody who has done it before inform me some before I dive in!

Locate as in buy? I installed KYB's on mine. Big improvement over stock. You can search my posts for some install tips. BTW I'm in Austin too. Feel free to PM me if you run into any problems.

Locate as in locate them to replace them, do I take out the rear shocks through trunk paneling? Front shocks im guessing come out through wheel wells once wheels are off?

both front and rear come out, and go in through the wheel wells.

On the rear you have to take off the rear plastic panel and then the carpet covering each wheel well to access the top of the shocks. Fronts are easy.

On the rear, just make sure you have it correct before it expands into the wheel well. It's a b*tch to re-compress.

I just changed mine out. Originally I ordered Monroes for the rear only and had not installed them. Then I found a great deal on Amazon so I bought KYB's. They were so bouncy I felt like I was in a Low Rider. I swapped them out yesterday with the Monroes and I am very pleased. Also, They shipped me the wrong KYB's and are now saying "I" ordered the wrong ones. So be sure and double check you numbers and the order when it arrives. I didn't.... Grrrr!

I just took out the two carpet covered panels that cover the wheel humps and I was good to go. Taking out the rear panel is a pain.

I ordered Monroe shocks for my srt6 roadsters and the fronts were two inches longer than what was on it. Can anyone confirm the proper past number and correct extended length?

The car doesn't appear to be lowered...

Thanks

Dave

RockAuto has a listing for this. CLICK
Part number is listed as 39044 for both the NA and SRT.
Lengths are listed on the RockAuto site above. Compressed = 17.75 and Extended = 18.875.

Far be it for me to question the master of facts, but on that RA link, it says :
Travel Length 1.125"
I kinda doubt that.
I looked up a shock for my old 1990 Suburban :
Stroke (in) 5.51
for my '89 Probe :
Stroke 6.49"
for my 2002 Concorde :
Travel Length 6.250"
Around 6" travel seems pretty consistent, I find it hard to believe that we get by on Crossfires with only 1.125" travel. That would be a kinda bumpy ride.

O well, seems Beaner and I think alike, I didn't see his post before posting this.

I questioned that size myself, but what the heck that's what it says. I could not be bothered to check the stroke on my old ones sitting in the garage. It all depends on the geometry, the closer they are to the inboard pivot point the shorter the stroke required. With a 6" stroke on the wheel the shock stroke is proportional to the distance from the hinge point and the wheel and the shock. When they state a stroke there is probably a little more for design safety reasons.
Likewise the springs, they rely on leverage to compress them, if they were closer to the wheel we would really have a stiff suspension.
I could check my old ones of course but I am busy for a change.

I knew I was foolish for questioning the KOAF/KOATS.

Don't get me wrong, you may be right. I just quoted what the site says, it seemed a little small to me, I just explained the geometry of it, what the actual geometric sizes are I do not know.

Agreed. I think RA is wrong.
