Has anyone seen or heard of this TSB. I would like to know if it indicates the the wing may need to be oiled/greased? After time Iowuld rather do this myself then take it in and pay DC $85/ hour to oil my wing. That's a bit crazy for squirting oil.

 

Try a few drops it's not that hard to do.

 

Mine's not making sounds now, but if there is a TSB, then that could mean it will be happening eventually. I'd like to see what DC has to say about it.

 

Took mine in yesterday for the same exact reason. They didn't even look at it. The tech, who is very up on Xfires, pulled the TSB sheet and ordered the oil. Apparently, DC didn't put enough oil in during manufacturing phase. Once oil is added there should not be any future problems. I even had them look up the type of oil to see if I could get it locally so I wouldn't have to come back. However, the PN doesn't explain enough. Oh well, when the oil does arrive, from Germany, the tech is going to wait until I'm off work to finish the job. (I will be at the dealer at around 9pm) That's pretty cool he will wait for me 3 hours after service dept closes and 1 hour after dealer closes. In the mean time I am leaving the wing up to avoid any damage.

 

Did the Tech say where the oil went? Motor, fittings, or joints?

 

He said it was for the motor.

 

Well, the wing is fixed. Can't tell what kind of grease it was because it was written in German or something. However, it was like a clear, sticky silicone. It wasn't for the motor just all the joints. Works great. Lube cost about $24 and all he did was open the rear deck lid, remove the cover that covers the wing motor and lube it. He used most of the bottle to make sure everthing was covered. He even wipe down his work area and asked me if I wanted him to wipe down the outside work area. He knows how hard I work to keep the black at it's best.

 

LOL My dealer ordered everything. new including the wing. LOL

 

I had the same squeaking problem. I took it to the dealer to lube the wing and they told me their SOP was to lube the wing and if the squeking doesn't stop they replace the deployment motor. In my case, the lube did not work and they are replacing the motor tomorrow.

 

What kind of squeaking do you guys get, i get the noise 'errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrclick' for three seconds on deploying and q slightly more high pitched one on closing, is that normal?

 

it is just a metal on metal squeak that you hear when the wing deploys or retracts, kind of like when a door in your house squeaks. I would think you shouldn't hear any noise other than maybe the slight sound of the motor operation, which is usually masked by road noise.

 

had the same problem. it sounded like the motor was still running after the wing was completely deployed. when i went t o the dealer for scheduled service i let them know. when i pick the car up they say it only had to bu lubed & the noise is now gone.

 

My '04 just started making noise when the wing is initailly deployed. It's just loud enough I can hear a slight "squeak" for a brief moment as it starts up. Is this something that needs to be addressed NOW?

any diagram on how to get to the wing motor, ours squeeks on the way up only, but wasnt sure if I could get to the motor from the plastic cover under the wing.?

 

How to get the plastic cover off is well described in the Crossfire repair manual.

Here is a description of the procedure and the part number of the right lubricant (Krytox):
Krytox is made by german manufacturer. They do different lubricants and oils.
They are Perfluorpolyether (PTFE) – the brand name by DuPont for that is Teflon®.
So it's a kind of Teflon spray, Teflon oil, or Teflon grease.
I've tried Teflon spray and it works perfect for me, but Teflon oil would be better.

Been using Krytox for many years @ the Rocket Farm, mainly on SS fittings & bolts as an anti-galling agent. Be warned that you must be very careful not to get it on the skin as it can be absorbed and cause problems with calcium degregation in the bones. The fumes given off when Krytox get significantly above 300 C are about as toxic as cyanide. Expensive but readily available.

 

How much will the repair cost me if I get it done by a repair shop? My brother lend me his car and suddenly it gets problematic. He told me about technical service bulletins and had no idea where to check it.

 

How much does krytox cost? And how to properly apply it. It is kind of scary since it could cause calcium degregation in the bones.

Why not search on google or ebay for Krytox?
Krytox is very expensive.

And as said before it's an PTFE oil, or PTFE grease.
In my opinion you can use any PTFE oil without harming anything.
For example polylube 250 teflon spray gel lube lubricant 13oz - eBay (item 280427877435 end time Feb-15-11 17:23:55 PST)

I don't know how much it will cost if a dealer will do it.
For me it took 15 minutes to remove the interior covers and put PTFE spray on the gear wheels in the inside and reinstall the cover. I also put PTFE spray on all joints on the outside. No more squaeks and the rear wing runs very noisefree now. Most time takes it to put the rear wing in and out a few times so the PTFE oil could get anywhere – sprayed put it in and out, sprayed....

I have used krytox at work in the labs. It is top notch stuff and expensive.

But my go to lubricant has become Tri-Flo. It is also a PTFE based lubricant. It is like WD40 on steroids.
