Default I'm Confused on what to do!!!

Hi All,

As the title says, Im confused on what to do.

Ive been offered a very good deal on an Audi TTRS Replica soft top, auto, 45k miles, 2007 57 plate for a good price £10k. Reason for low price is its a CAT D, seen pics for the repairs and damage etc so know what I could be buying into.

However, this is the problem im having.

I have a 55 plate xf with low miles of 33k. I generally get bored with my cars quite quickly but ive had the xf for 2 years now and I still like it although it needs abit of a refresh.

Do I spend out money on the XF, either refurb wheels or new wheels and tyres, few startech bits, or just spend out on the TT? Maybe a few engine mods, filters etc.

The TT is a 3.2 V6 also comes with sat nav and all the goodies.

If I sell the XF for say £4.5k id be putting £5.5k to the cost of the TT. Or spend approx £2.5k giving the XF a refresh?

So people what would you do?

Be mindful of diminishing returns. Mods, if purchased used, can be sold without a loss once removed from the car.

What I'm getting at is I wouldn't spend money on improving a car you think you want to get rid of unless it's on parts you can resell or your adding to the value. Otherwise your throwing your money away if you decide a few months down the road your unhappy and ready to move on. Moreover, some of what you think might be improvement could actually turn off a potential buyer, as we all have different taste.

In summary, when you grow tired of a car it's time to sell. Plain and simple.

1. Your Crossfire has LESS miles.
2. The Audi TT is just plain butt-ugly.
3. Spend the 2.5K on the Crossfire.

Many thanks,

The only mods id do is the wheels and maybe a lower lip spoiler along with filters etc. The current wheels need refurbing and new tyres, so either way id have to spend money on them. Id keep the old set if I purchased new, so could sell either set on later.

With losing money. Any car depreciates over time anyway, So either way money would be lost.

Thanks again

The TTRS is a good looking car, I wouldn't entertain it otherwise.

But your right the XF does have less miles, which is one of the things niggling me. But Audi engines are pretty bullet proof. The interior has been upgraded to the new 2013 interior so usage is not an issue.

Agreed. I only looked at the old TT, the TTRS is a vast improvement.

You might want to consider this before you decide

Cat D is the least serious category. It usually means that the vehicle has suffered light damage but the insurance company's decision to repair it is dependent on the cost of the repairs and the value of the vehicle.

If you're buying a Cat D car, there's no guarantee that it hasn't incurred chassis damage. You can find out for sure by investing in a full mechanical inspection at an approved dealership, or by RAC Inspections.

If you buy a Cat D car, make sure your insurance company knows about it, otherwise they might not pay up on any claim.

Most important question is which suits you better (comfort, image, etc) ? None of these cars are bought for utility (though I find my coupe can carry quite a lot).

For me it was different: I wanted an American brand (yes, I know), was willing to put up with a few things (gearing, dash & electronics from the last century), wanted a manual transmission, and had to make some mods to get the seat where I wanted it.

But now it suits me. Which suits you better ?

Thank for all your replies, much appreciated.

Just wondering how much do you think it would cost to get my standard grey crossfire to look like this one:

Now that's nice!!!!

Depends on whether yours is RHD. Other than that I just saw wheels, nice black paint including on the pillars, and some decals.

Yep mine is RHD.

Not sure if its black or grey. But it does look good. Wonder how much it would cost to get it to look like that.

All Crossfires are black in the dark. LOL
I had a black one and it was nice for 10 minutes, maybe less as the dust showed up pretty quickly.

In your case the color and the Startech Crossfire are not in the equation if you want the TT get it. Be wary of any crash problems and be aware that it may be hard to sell later, which in your case may be next year or sooner. If you have to ask for advice then I think you know what you should do already, you just want people to reinforce your decision. I say skip the TT, nice cars but in this case .......

I own a TT 3.2, own a SLK 350, and I owned a Crossfire.

Let's face it, a 3.2 TT is not a TTRS. You will spend more than just ton of money to make it as fast as the actual TTRS.

Couple things I want to express, pick and choose your priority to make sure it fits your preference:

1. The ONLY reason I preferred a 3.2 TT over a TTS is the sound. The VR6 produces MUCH better sound than the I-5 Turbo TTRS and I-4 Turbo TTS. But the TTS and TTRS is easier to tune, and you will spend less time to make the car faster. The VR6 TT will not have too much of a gain unless you put Force Induction into it. (HPA single turbo kit can knock it up to 500HP).

2. The are TWO things I concerned about my TT are: The DSG and the Haldex. My DSG controller (Mechatronics) has been replaced @ 26K miles, and it is still remain questionable if it will break again (more likely will). The DSG & Haldex require attentions of service as well, every 40K mies. DSG will require fluid change sooner than 40K miles. When it comes to Crossfire, the only thing you really need to worry about is the head gasket leak.

3. The ONLY reason I did not keep my Crossfire is interior & features. Let's face it, Crossfire does not have all the nice features that the TT and the SLK offers. The Crossfire cannot compete in this category. Although I feel it's nice that Crossfire offers what it has, but still lacks technology. If you're heavy on those things, you may want to reconsider.

The Pros and Cons:

1. Crossfire in the long run will cause you lest headache, while cars from VAG will cost you a fortune, unless you have all the VAG COM software & cable. (which I spent a fortune upfront) But still, all the Haldex & DSG fluid costs. If the TT is a manual, it will be better.

2. The VR6 TT will pickup faster than a NA Crossfire. However, you have a heavier load to pick up. The VR6 has a nice sound. The DSG IS VERY NICE.

3. In the snow, if the TT is a later model (08, 09), it can transfer up to 100% power to the rear wheels while front wheel lost traction completely. I have had a lot of fun in the snow with the TT being almost a complete rear wheel drive.

4. My TT has the magnetic ride suspension that actively change the suspension stiffness. This is nice. When the sports suspension setting is on, the car handles very nice. As good as the Crossfire can do. If your TT has same thing, I would not hesitate to get your hands on it to give it a try. The down side is, if one of these structs goes, you will have to replace all 4 of them. That goes back to the maintenance cost.

The MOST important thing you have to know

There is nothing wrong with the Crossfire. The maintenance cost is low. Nothing will have to be changed, you can mod it anyway you want to make it the way you like it. The switching to TT is going to cost you dearly.

HOWEVER, it is your choice, and please look into priorities that you care about, what YOU prefer over what others say.

Hope for the best.

Shibing
