Replace your Steering Stabilizer, you'll be surprised.

I just replaced my steering stabilzer and all I can say is WOW! I have been going through the front end of the car tightening everything up and it still wasn't quite what I thought it should be. For less than $30 and about 15 minutes worth of work (including jacking up the car) with a 16mm socket it is WELL worth it. It really tightened up the steering. Just becuase they aren't leaking, doesn't mean they aren't worn. Mine has 27,000 miles and I felt a huge difference.

Any pictures?

I'm in the same process, you think you can explain where it's located and what you had to do to get to it, it would be awesome if you can do that! ;)

Thanks for the tip... I'll have to check mine out... I've just broken 40k lately, so it may be about time... :D

It's REALLY easy. Easier than changing the oil. Jack the car up and look at the steering linkage. It's the part that looks like a Shock Absorber. It's held in by two 16mm bolts and nothing is in the way of removing it. VERY EASY INSTALL! I got mine from this company http://www.joetlc.com/. He sells through eBay: Here's a pic of the part.

Heheh. That leads to a large page of dampers. Still not sure which one to order. I will try to contact the company to be sure before I order it.

OH! Forget what I said. I see the number now... 1244630432. It was at the top. The list is just for all the cars it fits. :)

~ great post...

it would do the trick to eliminate the side to side slop (and occasion clunk) in the steering wheel feedback (after some age).

Also ...by the time you add shipping it is cheaper through Amazon. ;)

Good post, mine failed and was replaced under warranty at around 12K miles. Perhaps a bad batch of them.

Would this help the steering wheel's direction? My steering seems to want to pull a little to the right. Is this normal? Sorry if this is off topic.

re: Replace your Steering Stabilizer, you'll be surprised.

Thought i would look in to this steering stabilizer as my car likes to jump all over every time i hit a bump or anomily in the road.
So first off i thought i would call a chrysler dealer for this part (124 463 04 32) this turned out to be a big joke as they wanted $214 cad and said it would have to be ordered so 2 to 3 weeks LOL.
Next i called a mercedes dealer and shock and supprise their price was only $60 cad for a mercedes part.
so you can guess i will be buying parts from the mercedes dealer before the Chrysler dealer from now on just tell them you have an '04 SLK and you will get the right parts.
I will be installing this steering damper tonight so i will post my findings as to weather it fixed the problem.

Done!

Total cost: $35.00 US with shipping.

WOW! What a difference!

The original dampner in my car was totally shot after 30K miles. The thing was completely loose in the shaft when I pulled it out. Took me less than an hour to jack up car, remove old dampner and replace. I highly recommened this replacement if you like your steering nice and tight! Thanks to the original thread owner for letting us all know about this.

Thanks to this thread I ordered mine and installed it last weekend while changing oil. Easy install. Only have 28k on car but I can tell the difference. Worth the money.
