Default steering dampner???

I have a dealer telling me the steering dampner needs replaced on my 2005 crossfire roadster, with 40000 miles on it. Should this be worn out already or is the dealer just looking for work at 750$ a pop?

I changed mine out at ~25k miles - cost about $30 with shipping and took about 15 minutes. Do a search on 'steering dampner' and you'll find a lot of info about it. $750 is a MAJOR ripoff...

Yes, it is probably worn out. Many of us have had them replaced under warranty, mine included and probably around 10K miles. Not hard to replace yourself and I'd venture a guess that superior ones are available. Even buying a factory one, you can replace yourself and save at least $500

My replacement one is already worn out again and will be looking for a new one shortly.

What are the signs or symtoms you would expect to feel with a worn-out steering damper? How do you check it?

Ben

Fu¢k man they want that much!?!? There's a thread on here with an online vendor who sells them at an affordable price. I think I paid close to 40 with shipping and installed it myself, this weekend actually. Mine didn't feel as worn as other members have reported but after replacing it the steering clunks have definitely subsided quite a bunch.

A sure sign you need a new one is if it has any oil on it. Unless you have the crappy Continental tires it is hard to tell you need it, but once you replace it you should feel more firmness in the steering. I replaceed mine recently and like they all said, $30-$40, two bolts and 15 minutes of your time.

I just spoke with Ferris down in Texas (member swordscustom) who works in parts. He said the price skyrocketed on those through chrysler for some reason. Our discounted rate at 20% off is $615

That is who sold me mine except I bought one he had on Ebay. I prefer the protection of Ebay and Paypal.

It also seemed like the exact same part. If it is a different manufacturer then I am happy to take my chances since the originals don't last all that long.

Whenever you can't find a Crossfire part, check for SLK320
