Hey Guys, For some time now, I thought I may have a wheel bearing or two bad. Now I find out that the GoodYear F1 tires are having a problem with NOISE. When I bought the tires, customer reviews were good. Recently I checked again and they are terrible. Something changed.

I called TireRack about my tire issues. They told me that Goodyear and TireRack came up with a program to replace the tires for free, plus add $100 credit to my CC account for return shipping, etc...

The one tire on the list that customer service recommends, which is part of the program, is the Michelin Pilot PS AS-plus for handling, ride, and noise levels. The "plus" designates it has had a minor redesign for noise issues as the GoodYear tire is having now.

So what do you guys think?

If it just costs me mounting and balance, I plan to go thru with it. If anyone purchaced GoodYear tires from TireRack, call them to see if you are eligiable for free replacements.

One more question.

If you wanted more sidewall for the rear, would you go 275/35/19 or 255/40/19? Curious what your opinions are since the tire is available in both sizes.

The 255/40/19 would have the bigger/taller side wall.

 

How many miles on your tires? I have about 9,000 on mine.

I pulled my car out of storage 2 weeks ago. Same thing, at first thought I had a couple of bad bearings. Later figured out it is the Eagle F1's. It is less obvious when the top is down, which is most of the time, but when the top is up, boy they sure are LOUD.

I didn't go through Tire Rack for these. I only hope I get the same offer from Suburban Tire here in Chicagoland.

 

So I called Tire Rack and it is a great deal. Free tires! But I was told that only 4 tires were eligible for the Goodyear replacement program and only the Goodtyear F1 Asymmetric was stocked in the staggered Crossfire sizes. These are a max summer performance tires which means another set of wheels and Blizzaks ($900 for the tires alone) if you want to drive year-round.

But free tires... Tough to turn down. Anyone have experience with the F1 Asymmetrics?

 

Just curious, are yours the F1 A/S's? We've had the same experience with the F1 A/S but bought them directly from a Goodyear store.

 

12,000 miles on my F1 All Season. They never once asked about mileage on the tires.

The sidewall question is mute now. Tires can only be replaced by the same exact size. Next time I will go with a different size on the rear to gain just a bit more sidewall.

The Michelin PS AS-plus tires are ordered. As soon as GY and TR approve the transaction, they will be sent, they are in stock. Shouldn't be a problem since TR recommended them for replacements.

Interesting. We have about 12k miles as well. I'll be giving Goodyear a call. I sure liked those tires when they were new. And they still handle very well on dry and wet pavement. They are just so LOUD now.

 

I replaced a set of Goodyear F1 GS/D3's 6 months ago(tires were slicks at 18,500 miles; no kidding NO tread left) - went with F1 All Seasons because of some snow and cooler weather issues -

The all sesaons in warmer weather just DO NOT handle like the GS/D3's. The GS/D3's were great until about 12,000 miles then they became a little slick, and VERY loud. and below 40 degrees they were very slippery, until you drove on them for awhile.

So are all season's part of this?

 

I've been holding out to get the F1 GS/D3's for the SRT-6. I just check the Goodyear website, and apparently they no longer make them for our size wheels. I guess there's a reason for that.

Those Hankooks are looking better and better now.

 

Getting more sidewall will affect the overall circumference and throw off your odometer and speedometer. Also, you are going to get more sidewall flex when cornering.

 

I prefer a bit better ride over fast cornering. I am sure the 40 series will do just fine for my driving habits. The speedo may be about 1 mph off at 65mph according to the tire size calculator. James

 

Are you guys swapping the tires to rotate them from left to right so as to even out the wear pattern on the contact patches. Many tires like my BFG's make noise if not rotated to even the wear. Get a flashlight to see the tapered shape on the rubber chicklets on the tire, can even feel it as you rub them front to back and visa versa.

I actually rotated all my tires, side to side and ran them backwards for two days. The noise remained the same. That is why I was leaning towards bearings.

Funny, TR made it clear to me that there were only 4 tires that could be ordered. 3 Goodyear variants and a Dungflop. I asked about the Michelins and, while they indeed recommend them, TR indicated GY would not pay for them. If my customer service guy was wrong, please tell me to whom at TR I should be speaking.

Ken, As noisy as my tires are, I was willing to take anything they were going to give me. Did you tell them you had a Crossfire?

Once I told them they were for my Crossfire, she told me that none of the tires on the list were sized for the Crossfire. She turned me over to another department and that is when another person gave me options from a second list of All Season tires. From that list I chose between a few choices after I checked them out on the Internet.

I've been running w/ the Goodyear F1 A/S's on both cars since I bought them & the set I presently have on the SRT will be the last set I buy simply because of the noise issues. I can't complain about the road handling, they're beautiful tires in the rain & light snow, BUT after 10K you can start to pick up on the hum & after another 2 or 3K the rumbling starts. I can always hear either car several blocks away from the house & that's just crazy.
I'm thinking I may try the A/S Conti's whcih have gathered some fairly decent reviews or maybe the Michelins.
Decisions, decisions.......

 

Arrived today.

 

New tires are on, the old ones are on the way back to TireRack.

First 20 miles, the tires feel and sound great - NO NOISE! Which means I don't have to replace the rear wheel bearings. So I have 2 rear, new in the box, wheel bearings on the shelf. It seems my first set of GoodYear tires ever, left me with a bad impression. We will see how my first set of Michelins do.
