Yes, download the service manual and read, read, read. If you cannot understand the instructions then find a helpful member local to you and between the two of you, it should be no problem (with simple basic tools of course).

As stated, first download the service manual, it will tell you how to first inspect. From there, either adjust (unless something damaged the cable I do not think it would be a problem), or replace, the shoes. If your not confident you can do these things, find a member local, and invite to dinner. Many members would like to help just finding him/her might be problematic. Good luck!

I can not see these shoes EVER wearing out.
Surely someone would never try to stop the car with the hand brake on a regular basis.

I was just saying that if the handbrake is only used in parked situations, then there is no wear at all on the shoes.
If you use the hand brake to slow down on a regular basis, then there will be wear.

Most handbrake failures I see are when the linings break away from the shoes. After a number of years of hot and cold, the bonding fails.

I had one of the pads on the front come apart. The car has 55k, and still had about 50% left. Having a six speed and being a truck driver keeps brake use to a minimum.
BTW, I agree that the parking brakes should last forever. But your delamination story seems to ring true. I would still check them out before deciding they should be replaced. Waste not, want not.

I had an E-brake shoe come loose and it allowed the car to be backed up only, when trying to go forward the pad jammed up the other shoe and stopped the car dead in its tracks after an inch or two. This was not the Xfire by the way.
