Default Which fuel is better?

Hello all,

Quick question. Are there gas stations that have a better fuel than others?
Gas stations around my house are:

RaceTrack
BP
Shell
Hess
Chevron
and others

All of them sell 93 octane. Does it make a difference which one I choose?
Thanks.

most jaguar's will not even run on BP gas...i think it is the ethanol in their fuel. i can't recall ever hearing anything good about BP gas. i had an 02 M3 and the dealer told me not to use BP gas either.

Wow, that's wierd. I use BP 93 octane all the time. Didn't realize it has ethanol. Is there some law that says the gas companies have to disclose what's in their fuel?
(I've only filled up the car 4 times so far) It seems to run fine. Guess I should check it out a little more.

By the way, 93 octane here is $2.20 today. What's it there?

Since they all are using additives in their fuel, and since you'll never know exactly what's in each brand's additives, it would be hard to determine which is the absolute best. Often one station is using the same fuel supplier as the competitor down the street.

That said, i'm sure there are differences from brand to brand. But there may also be significant differences from refinery to refinery of the same brand. Also, some additives may be better than others for your car. The best thing to do is find one you like and one that your car seems to like at a price you can tolerate. Otherwise, it can't hurt to mix it up and buy from a variety of stations that seem to agree with your car.

I posted a few weeks ago about a strong sulfur smell from my exhaust after hard acceleration. I had been buying most of my fuel at a Crown station which is a fairly common regional brand in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. Since then I've tried my local Shell station and so far I haven't noticed the problem (though I haven't done a real good heavy acceleration on the interstate recently). But I think the Shell fuel in my neighborhood may very well have less sulfur content than the local Crown. Ironically, it is Shell that is being sued in Florida for $100M for damages to fuel gauges caused by high sulfur content resulting in the closing of 400 stations during the Memorial Day weekend this year.

If I had my pick of any 93 octane fuel at the same price I would choose Citgo simply because they were the most convenient and the best price in the neighborhood I used to live in and I never experienced any problems. I typically drive vehicles for at least 150K miles and have never had to replace a fuel injector or catalytic converter or any other expensive component that could be effected by poor fuel quality. I've never experienced noticeably reduced fuel economy or performance either.

My local garage has the equivalent of 93 Octane (US) at 83.9 p per litre. That works out at about ’3.85 per UK gallon or approx $5.25 per US gallon (if my rough maths for the exchange rate is correct).

I have always used Chevron for ALL my vehicles.

It's not just because I work for them, but I work at one of their Research facilities and I have spoken to our engine lab folks and here is what they told me...

They had a fleet of taxis running an off brand gas. When they broke down the engines there were tons of deposits.

They put the engines back together (without cleaning them) ran a few tanks of CHEVRON gas through them. When they broke them down and looked inside the engines were clean!

I told this to a friend of mine. He was using COSTCO gas in his NSX.
He tried a few tanks of CHEVRON and called me all upset! :x

He said "I hate you! I have about a 10% increase in power AND better gas mileage!"

Use what you want but I'll always use CHEVRON.

Well, I guess there's not a lot of difference between gas stations. I think I'll stick with Chevron or Shell though. No BP...
Here in Orlando we pay about $2.18/gal for octane 93.
Thanks

Hi everyone-
my dealer said I could use regular gas instead of premium. Anybody got an opinion?

they are wrong.

if a car requires premium fuel...you should use it if you want the maximum performance

Use premium fuel. It's a high compression engine. The manual says to use at least 91 octane fuel. Under the right conditions you could do some damage to the engine using regular fuel.
