Due to engine/transmission management, the kick-down shift points are electronically influenced, and the shift comport can be improved partially by ignition timing manipulation (The Spirit Booster actually impacts both the ECU and the TMS). During the warm-up phase the shift points are raised via output signals from the electronic engine system to improve exhaust gas emissions.
Additionally it is a DRIVER ADAPTIVE system that “learns” throttle response patterns. Often you will be tooling around through the neighborhood with the top down soaking up the sun – RPM’s loafing @ 1,200 - 1,500 rpm. You get to the stop sign at the street that merges / intersects that #@$% road that is jammed with idiots ripping by at 55 – you spot a pocket, floor it…and hey where is the vroom vroom? Thank – you mister driver adaptive tranny! Several work around …turn off ESP at light, or downshift into the stop and leave it in 1st. AMG did fiddle with the ECU/TMS but it still retains the core MB “gentle acceleration” programming that characterizes the MB vs. BMW difference. So I would encourage you to experiment and judge for yourself how the transmission character changes based on how you drive the beast.
Cheers.
Also big problem chrysler mechanics not knowing what they are doing. Unless of course you are lucky enough to find someone certified to work on our cars. I was lucky to find one.
