He knows what kind of oil it takes and that there is no "break-in" oil. I am aware that my dealership, a 5-Star dealership, views Phoenix, and I assume properly so, as a "severe service" area because of the high summer heat and there is always a lot of dust.
I'm a fellow greater Phoenician (you don't live in Scottsdale and take offense, do you?), and I still think you're OK on the 5K interval. I've been in St. Louis and New York City in the summertime, I guess I fail to see how 100 degrees and 100% humidity in those steampits is any less harsh on an engine than Phoenix. Plus if you're anything like myself, your driving is a nice steady diet of city / highway mix driving. I just got my 300m oil changed Tuesday after about 4600, with no dire warning from the guys at Pitre.
