It probably would be louder and gernerate more hp, at the higher rpm band IMO. The tube would need to be fairly flat oval, as there is little room between the MAF sensor and the bottom of the hood. This shape would not the optimal design for moving air fast (although probably more efficient than the stock air box, which looks like might have chambers or baffles for noise control). I forgot, did someone actual dissect their air box to see the inner workings? I have my cover off the engine right now and it doesn't look like I can take it apart without ruining it.
