A trick you may want to use, if you have a voltmeter/multimeter, is to hook one of your leads up to a thin sewing needle. That way you can just pierce through the wire without a lot of hassle. Just be sure to re seal the hole you made with a little dab of silicone sealant!

I mean the hole in the wire.....not your finger!
