The inside of the thermostat was removed. There is no reason to do this for anything at all. The thermostats on these car simply pop off with two screws and pop right back on. There is no need to remove the center piece. You can see where the mechanic had to pry it open with a tool to get it off, because it is not supposed to be removed.
