None of this would have happened if you had shipped what was requested.

Selling someone a round peg for a square hole, and refusing a return because it was damaged while being forced into a square hole is bad business.

Your customer acted rationally by trying to get the thermostat to work. The details of how the part was damaged are irrelevant.
