Default Intercooler Coolant Tank

I would like to get some ideas from forum members.

When separating the Engine/Intercooler surge tank - what would work better for the intercooler circulating tank? (the engine coolant would have it's own surge/header tank):

1) A tank where you add liquid ice (let's say distilled) and drain the excess out as the ice melts and thus the tank fills up with more coolant?

2) A tank where you can drop in big chunks of dry ice directly into the coolant and have a pressure vent valve to allow the expanding gases to escape?

3) A tank with a isolated chamber to drop dry or liquid ice into (requiring draining in the case of liquid ice)?

Thanks in advance for your input - I still have a bit of design time before fab.
